Do i need to complete HL1 to understand HL2?

i enjoyed ravenholm, it made my pants smell funny in 2 ways, first from launching gas canisters at zombies etc, aswell as saw-blades, secondly from rattling drainpipes making me poo myself.

I could never be bothered with hl1, it was an epic game yes, but i hav a bad attention span, id only try playing it when my internet turned off, because when it was on id be a cs/dod addict, and after about 30mins id decide to just play cs with bots instead.

IMO HL1 is 10x better than number 2 and you need to play number 1 to understand HL2 Fully.

Saying that though.... i bought HL1 7 years ago and have completed it several times. The game is v.basic now but gameplay is 10 stars!

It helps if you do finish HL1 though, because you get to learn how it all began. Barney, the scientists, G-Man and Black Mesa in general. The HL1 story is far superior to HL2's.

You dont really have to play half life 1 to enjoy half life 2, I think HL1 is a great game on its own and I would recommend playing it before HL2 due to the fact its a great game and you will get to know the characters abit more and reconise them in the HL2 onwards, in HL2 the story is pretty much explained and not to hard to follow or know whats going on.

I've not played blue shift and im planning on playing it soon since i've got it free when i bought the silver HL2 pack back when it was released.

That Gonarch thing is definitely a bug, I had it myself and it kept recurring (tried like 10 times, thought maybe I was doing it wrong after unloading all my ammo into it's sack).

The only way I was able to get past that section was by going back to a much earlier save game (which was kinda annoying cos I had to find the massive spider out in the open).

Regarding the orginal question, no you don't need to complete HL1 to understand HL2. At least not on a basic level. HL2 is just a FPS like any other and while there a couple of recurring characters it works perfectly fine as a standalone game. It took me over 4 years to complete halflife so by the time I finished that I'd pretty much forgotten much of the early storyline in any case.

i've owned HL1 since release date and have to say what a fantastic game, also encountered the same bug and eventually just saved it on level before and after 10 or so attempts got by it

as with most i gave up at xen the first time i played it and actually completed Opposing Force and BlueShift first and went back and completed half life 1

then i replayed them over and over for like 5 years, and then on release played and completed HL1 and Ep1 and am really looking forward to beating Ep2

in my eyes anyone who hasn't taken the time to play and complete these fantastic games has not experienced true FPS

and back on topic to answer ** question, play it to xen if u get bored use cheats to skip to ending movie. you dont miss much between

HL games are definitely in my top 5 all time greatest games closely followed by fallout 2 and Deus Ex
