Do I need to update my BIOS?

Well there we go then... Wait for a decent game patch after official release (that just seems to be par for the course these days) and possibly a gpu driver update too, before worrying about BIOS updates.

You don't have to run at 240hz though, just because you can.

I can tell the difference between 60hz and 165hz but I generally run at 120hz because I can't really tell the difference once I'm above 120hz

Yeah thanks, this thread was mainly asking for advice about bios. Whether it's normal to never update it etc. I didn't update it since building my PC and I saw some versions have cpu support so was unsure.

I'm been playing above 140+ fps in most games. Having to cap to 90 FPS was noticeable and was depressing.

It's normal to update it when you build the pc and then leave it alone forever. On rare occasions there might be some reason to update it, but generally not.

It used to be normal and outside of the enthusiast crowd (like us on here) it still is. Given the improvements to general stability and compatibility that happen over the years and the recent(ish) frequency of security issues, I wouldn't recommend leaving one for years anymore. That said, I would not expect it to have a severe performance impact, BIOS updates rarely add more FPS unless there's something they needed to address.

I would still update that bios as it's four years old. There was a agesa update in one of the AM4 bios versions that gave a huge performance boost plus there is all the security vulnerabilities that have been patched since then so it's well worth doing. Personally I always keep mine up to date as well as the chipset drivers.

Also good points...

If you BIOS is 4 years old, I'd say it's probably worth flashing.. I generaly tend to update teh BIOS when I get a 'new' board for that very reason, and then, unless there's a compelling reason, I tend to not bother updating it after that.

EDIT: All i'm saying is don't expect a BIOS update to fix a wierd CPU usage issue in a beta game.. that's 'probably' more down to the game needing a patch and possibly a GPU driver update when available.
