Do I wait?

I would have to agree on all aspects.

I have played with pretty much all the latest cards and my current kick around card until I decide on my next purchase plays everything at 1920x1200 without any issues.

1920x1200 8AF

C&C3 Full in game 6xAA everything on
Stalker Max settings no AA
Wow Max detail 6X AA
Rainbox 6 Max detail 1600x1200 no AA. Plays nice
Eve 6X AA
Oblivion No AA cant remember settings.

The card, 256MB X1950XT running max Overclock in the CCC. Cracking card. The GTS obviously would be even better.

Now I realize how big of a bottleneck my 3700+ is

To address the OP original question ... the answer is can you wait 3 weeks ?
Ignore the benchies you have seen as there is no telling how true they are, and TBH form the inconsistancies displayed I suspect they are fictional at best.

The 8800 GTS 320 is cheaper, but if you don't upgrade every 6 months, it pays to get the best you can afford, and personally I can see 320mb being a handicap for a lot of newer games as well as some current.
If you were looking at long term then I would suggest going for a 640mb model, which is the alleged price point of the 2900XT, so unless you are in a "must have now" situation, it can only be worthwhile waiting for official reports, even if the 2900XT doesn't meet expectations you will only have "lost" under 3 weeks.

Spending upwards of £170 has got to be worth considing all the options for the sake of 2-3 weeks ?

Just my tuppence worth :)

well this is how see it if a 8800gtx cant play stalker without stutters then hows it gunna be in next 4 or 5 months when most of the big games come out theyll be mid range by then.might aswell get a 1950 pro or stick with what you got until the bigges are out.think theyll end up being like a 7800gtx dead before there time.

Stalker stutters with any card, its a coding issue.

This is what i think, i can run supreme commander 1920x1200 and whack it right up and its fine and thats on an X1800XT, same with most other games aside from stalker, so im wondering what a 8800 would give me (i will buy either 640 meg 8800 or a r600 in the next few weeks regardless). The supersampling sounds nice can anyone elaborate on what it does

Vogon,

Unfortunately the 320mb is probably the best I could afford. Otherwise I definately would be getting the 640mb if only for future proofs sake. If the 2900XT is going to be around that price as well then I might not be able to afford it.

I think I will go for the 8800GTS as I want a good card for 1280*1024 that will last me about a year to a year and a half. I don't mind lowering AA for the sake of gameplay if it comes to that after a year.

You dont need a 640 meg card for gaming in at 1280, honestly that is quite a low rez. We seem to have goten a bit mad in this forum of late about needing a 640 meg 8800 for anything over 1024, its utter tosh. I would say yes go for it if you game at 1600+, its a bit like the powesr supply thing where people say you need a 1kilowat PSU to run a 8800 and a few drives

I was thinking less of 640mb for the res, more for futureproofing as he intends on keeping it for a while.
But at the end of the day if £170 is your top wack, the 320 GTS is going to be the best bet, I have no idea if the HD2x series will have a competitor in that price bracket, if you are not desperate its might be worth the wait to see.
I would say its very unlikely the 2900XT will be any lower than £250.

Although HD2900XT may well be more than £250 or whatever, as its only 2 weeks, I cant see what harm you'd do waiting, as it'll give you another option, and may result in better price competition. However, the already given info on the 8800GTS is still valid, its a good card, but as its only a fortnight, if you can afford to wait, I'd suggest you do, as it may give you other choices, depending on whether the good or bad benchmarks are true.
