Do we need high street banks?

High Street bank came in rather useful today when I needed to deposit some money and have it show right away

Ok, branch manager's time...

Our footfall has not decreased since Internet Banking came out - simple as that. People still want to withdraw large sums of money - car purchase froma private bidder for example. No one in their right mind would release a £6k car without the cash in their hand and you woudn't wire the money to their account until you'd a) seen it and b) had the keys in your hand.

Automation works well, but only goes so far. It can follow a set of instructions whereas a person can go further than this. You say an internet transfer that's gone wrong is easy to trace? Yup. Easy to get back...not particularly. Cheques cannot be phased out either, we process aorund 800 a day through our branch and we ain't a massive branch by any stretch of the imagination.

In summary, internet is useful and all that, but replacing the branch? Not going to happen in our lifetimes.

Money is very emotive and a lot of people simply want a person to deal with it,

The only time I go to the bank is to pay in cash or cheques, which is only about once a month at most.

online

hole in the wall

We don't need to go in a room with people anymore.

How much cash are we talking?

1. dont trust online security

2. hole in the wall are crap. a) information is very limited it cant check pending transactions etc b) had to go to 3 of em yesterday because the first two didnt have any money

3. No ******* way ill be waiting listening to stupid music on a phonecall to a bankcallcentre (uk i hope) that im paying for.

4. Mistakes and or cancellations/setting up financial transactions and so forth. Goes quicker setting them up/cancelling in person.

e.g. recently a rogue company tried to charge me 10x what their usual monthly charge is (with no notification): went into bank filled out a form and they refunded the money back straight away.

Somethings you still cant do online, dont know how many time I have had to go to the bank to arrange something as I can cant do it online or over telebanking. When your running a small business you need to be able to keep you paperwork right. That means cheques and receipts, pc's will break down, software has bugs power outages etc. I have tried paying directly into my suppliers accounts but it is just so easy to make a mistake compared to you paper work.

Poor people, such as myself need to put money in the bank frequently for direct debits etc, as I get my wages into a different account!

I still find it hard to believe that my local brach wouldn't set up a standing order for me, telling me that my account was "self-service" and thus I had to do it over the internet.

Absolute ****ing waste of space. So yes, get rid.

Evidently!

"True businessmen" (and trust me I've worked for a few) do not have multiple business accounts which the stream from/to with various different banks and so on. It's over complicated and unnecessary. Why pay an accountant to do something that didn't need doing in the first place?

I pay cash & cheques into my Alliance & Leicester Commercial account at the post office! Everything else I do online. Sorted!

I never go into an A&L branch, ever.

Here's hoping easyrider doesn't have the Post Office on his 'To get rid of' list.
