Do we really need a 5090 ?

I actually think we’ll see a price cut on the 5080 down to $1000 next gen so people think it’s a good deal.
Nah

People paid the premium this time around.

Nvidia will up the price and say you're getting AI and everyone bitch complain while opening their wallets curse them for ruining the industry while they enter their card deals. Then blame AMD for not having their cards out to make Nvidia lower their price.

Yes otherwise we get lazy Nvidia. No one wants lazy Nvidia.

The 4060Ti is bad enough.

Look back at the 8800 GTX, amazing card but there was no real competition, so they released it again as the 9800 GTX with a die shrink, then again as the GTS 250…

Worse than that the 9800GTX was an overclocked 8800GTS (G92 core) then re-released as the GTS250 - I can't remember specifically now but originally there was going to be a whole new refresh on G92b between the 9000 series and 200 as well but then AMDs 4000 series started to emerge.

I dont think the flagship cards are about what people need, if i needed £1700 cards to be happy gaming then i would instantly quit and get another past time

The 4080 is probably Nvidia's worse selling card this gen and I think they'll adjust pricing on it next time around, if they want to keep the $1200 price tag then it needs to be on the 102 silicon.

£1700 every 2 years or so isn't a huge amount for some to keep a hobby going, granted that's on top of other components you need to buy to stay at the cutting edge.

The problem is what it does to the tiers below, as everything gets pulled up if they follow the 4-series model. I didn't have much of a problem with the previous Halo products for those who needed to have the very best, as the difference in performance going to the model below wasn't gigantic and the cost of doing so was much lower.

Personally don't see the flag ship prices as a problem, if anything the 4090 is cheap at £1500(ish) it is the line-up below that which is terrible - the 4080 should be a £800 card at max and even then you are talking a card which is only just a little faster than the normal x70 generational increase performance wise, at significantly higher price than the previous x70 price and everything is worse under that.

2 things:

1) Most of the 70% increase in performance is likely to come from DLSS4
2) By the time the 5090 comes out, Unreal 5 games are likely to be available and I suspect these games given the number of polygons involved are going to need to have a much beefier gfx card than what's currently available to run at high resolutions

If nvidia are moving to a 3 year cycle now AMD has dropped out of the high end gfx market, then £1700 for a flagship card isn't unreasonable for a hobby (works out at £567 per year). Much cheaper than going to the pub or going to football etc (although I personally would wince at paying so much just for 1 piece of computer equipment).

Don't forget said card will also have a resale value, poss a third of the purchase price.

8800GTX, ahhh those were the days

50 series is still at least over a year away, Spring 2025 by Nvidia's own info. At the very possible earliest maybe October 2024.

Everywhere I see people frantically talking about the 50 series.

Because there are no good 4000 series options apart from the 4090 and only a minuscule segment of the market will drop £1500 on a card.

5000 series talk is mostly people desperate for some value for money options again like the 3060ti and 3080 from the previous gen.

Value is dead.

If you wait 18 months you might get 4070 performance for 4060TI cash but there will be no bargain cards.

5080 won't be less than £1000 unless AMD by some miracle actually delivers a competitive RDNA 5 high end card and chooses to price to gain market share.
Personally I think all AMD's gamer talk is just cat fishing, their only real interest is being relevant enough get the console contracts.
