Do you drive while using your mobile phone?

I keep my nokia phone open in a holder in my car, because thats my primary number and just route it to handsfree and turn my Stereo down... if ive got my moto with me, ill just use my Bluetooth headset...

The problem with making/receiving calls in the car be it hands free or holding the phone is that some people treat this as their first priority and the control of the car as an after thought.

Not so much now but I used to use the phone a fair bit in the car (hands free though) but I’d always put the control of the car first, this used to often annoy people who I was talking to as all of a sudden I’d completely switch off from them as I would be concentrating on the changing road conditions.

Now when traveling to work I’m on my bike which means I sit a little higher than most drivers so I can get a better view of what they are up too whilst driving (helps when passing to see if they are paying attention). Now it’s scary the amount of people I see each day that have the phone in one hand in full conversation and the second hand seems to be struggling to hold the wheel, change gear and indicate (on the rare occasion).

Without a doubt these people are dangerous and really wish they would realize how they are putting lives in danger.

If I have to answer a call while I'm driving, it's to tell the person to hang on while I pull over.

Holding a phone/eating/drinking while driving is just downright stupid and something that really winds me up.

On the way back from the airport last year, we had a taxi driver who tipped his head back while driving to finish off his packet of crisps. He then had the cheek to comment on young drivers.

Parrot CK3000 for the win. Cost me £50 and fitted it myself! Does the job and now allows me to judge people when i seem them driving whilst holding a phone to their ear! :D

youngish girls seem to do it most. no excuse for it. get a cop on an unmarked bike and he'd catch 30 in a shift easy.

How many accidents do mobile users cause, versus people fiddling with the radio/aircon/lighting a cigarette/talking to passengers etc?

I bet millions use a mobile in their car every day without incident.

Is it just me that thinks it is more dangerous, granted you can drive without 1 hand but Im pretty sure you cant drive without your eyes?

yeah you're right i think it probably is more dangerous. I don't do it often though, and if I do ill be at lights or something.

What about people smoking when driving?

it's been proven that a drink driver stops faster than someone on a mobile phone.

Out of interest, what is the ultimate aim of this thread?

Is it a willy waving thread, to say "I drove 200 miles at 80mph with one hand"?

I remember seeing an episode of Police, Camera, Action on ITV. A girl fiddling with her stereo crashed her car. Why haven't car stereos been banned?

I am guessing he wants to know if people drive while using mobile phones, hence the question, 'Do you drive while using your mobile phone?'

I do occasionally and will continue to do so until they start issuing points for being caught doing it.

I'm with dirtydog too, it's no more dangerous than changing radio stations, lighting a cig, having a drink (non alcholic obv :o) etc etc. Why aren't these banned, oh they can't be proved that's why so the police can't make money out of it :)

if police are trusted to use communication devices at the wheel as well as other stuff like recording equipment I think it rather rich that we are not allowed to do the same....

Never, I get someone else to answer it or, if I'm on my own, just ignore it until I stop. Don't really get too many calls whilst driving though so it's not a problem.

I try not to change radio stations and whatnot whilst driving too, and I always use the on-wheel buttons rather than reaching over to the head unit.

All of those things (with the possible exception of the latter, which isn't quite as bad) are as bad as mobile phone use IMO :)

Indeed.

(Ah but the police are more highly skilled than us mere mortals... like the police car I saw at about 4.45am the other day with no lights on at all)
