Do you enjoy real ale? When did you start drinking it?

As the title really

Up to now (I'm 33) I've never really enjoyed drinking beer, I've been a cider drinker staying with Scrumpy Jack or Strongbow on a night out and avoiding lagers as I have always found them a bit nothingy.

Because of this I just didn't try real ales, the idea facinated me but I just associated them with lager and dismissed them.

Earlier this year on the OcUK trip to Scotland, inspired by Feek's beer threads and safe in the knowledge I would have Feek and Garp to guide me I swore that I would try and stick with real ale for the whole weekend sampling as many as I could to see if I liked them. And I do!

Since out little adventure to Edinbrurgh I must have tried 20 different ales from the darker Black Sheep all the way through to the lighter sweeter summer ales like the Badger Brewery's Golden Glory and Fursty Ferret (one of my favorites).

So what I would like to know is, do you drink real ale and when did you discover its joys?

are you enjoying it right now? :p

Bahaha! :D

But to actually answer the question, I'd say I've been on the ale for about five years now. There's loads of local places that serve great one-off ales and it's always nice finding a real gem. Have been going to the Great British Beer Festival for the last few years and it's just a great event - trying to sample something from every region is quite a challenge. Locally, we have the Triple FFF brewery that produces one of the best ales I've ever had called Moondance. We quite often buy up a barrel of it for BBQs and stuff. I'll still enjoy a cold lager every now and again but you can't beat a really tasty ale.

I'm thirsty now, looks like it's going to be a liquid lunch then!

yep i enjoy real ale got into it a yr or 2 ago when my dad started drinking it, im quite an early starter as most of my mates still wont touch anything unless it looks and tastes slightly like wee or paint stripper.

I've been drinking real ales for about 6 years I suppose, a nice guest ale after a game of golf and some peanuts is one of life's little pleasures :D

As for the thread I'm not really into Ales that much - though I have enjoyed a few in the past but cannot for the life of me remember what they were :o. Then again I'm not a huge beer drinker anyway.

I loves it I does. :)

I started drinking real ales from the time I started drinking really, about 20 years ago! /feels old

A couple of mates from where I worked invited me to a beer festival and I got right royally 'ammered, never looked back. :D

Been drinking real ales for about 12 years, started on Guinness as well and consumed that solely for 5 years

Then I drank a bit of lager (a decent lager is pretty good on a hot day, although Cider with ice in is better).

Now I find I swap between the three depending where I am and what I'm doing.

Yes I do, although I've no idea when I started drinking it. Can't remember what I used to drink when I started going to pubs.....probably went to the bar and asked for 'a beer' :p

Must be at least 13 years - cos I've got commemorative pint glasses from our local Camra beer festival for every year from 1993 onwards. :)

Which reminds me - I know there's a fair few people from Thurrock in here - Thurrock Beer festival is on this week (well, only tonight and Saturday left now) at the civic hall. If you like real ale, go! :)

Still like a nice cold bottle of lager when it's boiling hot though. :)

I think Im quite rare in that I dont have a set beer, or even type of beer I drink. Cold lager is he business on a hot sumemrs day.

You cant beat a pint of ale on a cold winters evening, and for dome reason Guinness is a must when watching the 6 Nations.

Horses for courses....

I think i just love beer. Possibly more than the wife

My dad took me to the pub when I was 17 (bloody hell, that's 17 years ago :( ) and bought me a pint of Courage Directors. I'm sure my underage drinking exploits involved real beer before this. My fave used to be Adnams Broadside (tried it bottled last week, oh how I was dissappointed)

I've tried a few round my girlfriends house when her parent's offer me some, though can't remember the name of them! One that I did try last summber was a 'Youngs' ale, summer fruits or something like that. Very nice and refreshing I thought.
