Do you enjoy real ale? When did you start drinking it?

I've always been a fan of real ale (40yrs) but it really does have to be "ale" and it does have to be kept and served properly.

During the various "smoking in pub" threads I think that I've mentioned a place here in Leeds that serves around seven or eight real ales from northern breweries together with Belgian/Dutch/German draught and bottled beers.

Just to put the cat amongst the pigeons ....... are there any real ale drinkers here who prefer their pint without a head? ...... seems to be a North/South thing dunno why.

:)

I've been a real ale fan for about twenty-five years. At festivals I tend to drink the rarer types like porters, milds and stouts, but otherwise most beers are fine by me. I even drink "lager" beers, but only the genuine stuff: Pilsner Urquell, Budvar etc.

Had my first real ale about 10 years ago I guess. I generally drink lager but do like to drink the real ales too.

I had one a while ago and I can't remember for the life of me what it was called but it was lovely, had a cinnamon taste to it I think. Wish I could remember what it was called :(

btw, anyone in cornwall ATM, royal cornwall show has a Skinners tent where they are serving straight from the keg stuff, I realy think you should try Cornish Blond, its not half bad!

I remember ordering a Belgian Blond in a microbrew in Chicago, I was mighty unimpressed when the guy handed me a glass of beer

meh
get down there NOW

I agree. Ale is much nice than largers etc. Largers are full of fizz which just makes me feel bloated. They all taste the same too. Cider I like but it gives me a headache after one pint for some reason. Ultimately i'm a whiskey man though.

So what I would like to know is, do you drink real ale and when did you discover its joys?

Yes I do :) I was probably early to mid twenties when I moved from Newcastle Brown to proper ales.

Just an aside but there is a Beer festival in Maidstone on the 2nd of September which a select few forumites might be attending if anyone would be interested. This won't be a full on meet just an afternoon of drinking .

Sounds good to me. I should be getting back to the UK on 31st August so I'd be interested.
