Do you enjoy real ale? When did you start drinking it?

bit of a late starter there... I was 15 when my Dad started plying me with alcohol in the pub (younger when he did it at home  )
When I was about 10, Dad used to let me be all sophisticated on Friday nights and have a Martini Rosso and Lemonade while watching Cagney and Lacey. :D

Think my first introduction to alcohol was a Snowball (advocaat + lemonade) at christmas one year, heh, the height of late 70s, early 80s sophistication, not!

I love real ale, but only since working in a pub! When I went to australia it was one of the things I missed most because they dont have it over there.. I had to try and get the next closest thing by drinking belgium cloudy lagers or this beautiful lager called James Squire!

well, i'm only 16 but when my dad gets some ale/lager/wine i always have a small bit.

can't say that i'm really a fan of anything other than Sherry, Scotch and white wine.

Not normally a fan, I find the taste to weak to my liking, well some anyway. But then I have not had enough to form a real opinion.

Mmm, it's Friday and the sun's out - I could murder a proper beer about now. Shame I'm stuck in the office :(

I've been on real ale since I was a student - the joys of a technical university in the north-west.

The problem I have is finding decent real ale pubs, they're few and far between in the Glasgow area. Thankfully I get to travel about a bit with work so it's not too bad, went to a cracking place in Taunton the other year which had Otter Ale straight from the cask :D

Too weak? You're drinking the wrong real ales. Get down the shop and get a bottle of McEwans Champion. Mmmmmm.

Far from weak tasting (or weak booze levels at 7.5%)

That is a good drop actually, bit too heavy for this weather though :D

Sierra Nevada or Tim Taylors Landlord for the hot weather.

I have to be in the mood for real ale, it isn't something I can drink all the time. That said, we did get through a few pints of brown in Edinburgh :)

I keep trying to like real ale. Have only really liked a couple though, most are just meh. Maybe I am drinking the wrong ones.

I don't really see the point in 'trying' to like something. You either do, or you don't.

Never had a lager or cider stage, started straight on dark ales at 16 and never looked back.

Took me a few years to get a taste for the hoppy pale ales though, gotta say in this weather a cold (yes cold) bottle of old empire is the winner, don't be tempted to drink lager just because it's sunny :)

Perhaps they have been served incorrectly or you are used to rubbishy lager. Id recommend trying some lighter ales which you may take to better; namely stuff I mentioned in this thread. If you have an Asda/Supermarket nearby try the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Timothy Taylors Landlord, or perhaps get on the German stuff like Erdinger.

Started 6 months ago on Brains SA and sometimes I'll try the guest beer. I have to say Schahalien (SP) and Bread of Heaven are two of my favourites, but I am starting to like the hopy beers.

Wont drink anything else now, everything else tastes like gassy chemical soup.

I've also started growing a beard, wearing a cap and smoking a pipe. eeeeee.
