Do you envisage Social media changing the future of Moderated Forums?

Out of interest does anyone like facebook?

I've never noticed anyone actually stand up for the platform even though it has 3billion users , just hate and negativity?

only if you check the 'facts' posted on facebook. I wouldnot trust anytjing i read there without further investigation.

That's not what I mean :) I mean, for me, speaking to people in the Middle East who use it as their primary and/or only communication channel.

As for 'facts' posted on FB, that's an entirely different matter.

It amazes me how some of you separate Facebook from OCUK, virtually everything I see on Facebook ends up on here and vice-versa, the only difference is that everyone is anonymous on here so can say what they want where on Facebook I think "Did that bloke who I actually know say that?".
That's the huge difference, you can be racist, sexist, transphobic and a host of other things on OCUK and nobody has got a clue who you are where on Facebook the only people I don't know are those commenting on Stoke on Trent Live or similar.

The other thing is that back in the early 00s there were plenty of young teenagers on here but we probably don't have any now.
One of the big sayings on here used to be "When are schools going back?".

I think Discord as taken over from IRC these days.

Twitter was the last of the big social platforms I joined, mainly because it seems like typing at the public. Nobody really knows each other. So it's like standing on a street corner ranting about something and seeing who 'loves' your tweet and replies, or who drops a hate reply to you.

I'm surprised Twitter as lasted so long. But I guess shouting in to random space is addictive to some people.

Reddit is pretty much just shouting into the void, which I guess suits certain kinds of people ;)

No conversations happen on there due to the horrible way threads are organized without ordering responses by datetime.

Which is great sometimes as I get tired having to sift through childish spats between users and unhinged fanboy rambling.

Depends upon how you use it. I have my family and genuine friends on there and I'm in a few groups I'm interested in (nature, photography, IT humour).

If you're constantly battling tards on Facebook, it's because the algorithm thinks you enjoy it!

I've never been able to get used to it even with the new layout it drives me nutz.

While old news, look how Bethesda shutdown their forums. https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/bethesdas-official-forums-will-be-closed-for-good-next-week/#comment-jump

"As an old guy on the internet, I have a real fondness for forums. Social media has largely usurped their utility, but it can't match the sense of community that comes from hanging out with a (relatively) small group of like-minded fans of particular games, movies, music, or whatever else is interesting enough to bring people together."

TV Forum also shutdown their forum. https://tvforum.uk/tvhome/

DigitalSpy stopped sections of their forum. General Discussion and Politics, which apparently left a lot of members finding other places to visit. https://tvforum.uk/mediawebsites/digital-spy-axes-general-forum-46859

IMDb removed their forums years ago as well.

It's rather good for people who no longer live close to each other and permits them to easily stay in touch, it still suffers from all the negativity and is very superficial. I have always likened it to the Random Picture thread here, entertaining and can easily fill 5 minutes of boredom.

Bethesda's wasn't up to much anyway the last iteration was awful forum software the old .com forum was the last decent one. Its not like they have an official social media platform to replace it just discord and thats only for casual chat. I suspect the real reason is simply the cost and the bother of maintaining it

Aaaaand nothing of value was lost. GD and politics were just full of drivel on the one hand and leftie barracking on the other tossing from the battlements anyone who disagreed with far left politics. Probably consumed vast amounts of bandwidth for very little return (did anyone actually visit the site the forums were attached to? Not sure I ever did)

People like that will just drift onto social media or reddit and continue their rubbish there. IMDB forums weren't much better
