Do you find text speak insulting/rude?

It just makes people seem like morons I think to be honest..

Spot on. It makes people sound like complete and utter gonks.

Annoyingly, a lot of people I know who choose to use it are of a average intelligent level and above.

This for instance...

Meh.

I remember when I was much younger, I used to use text speak quite a lot on the interweb, especially in forums. In fact I remember most people did as well. Didn't really care back then, but one day made a concious effort to type properly. Didn't take much longer either, as I had managed to self-teach myself how to touch type.

I remember a time when there was less emphasis on typing "proper" i.e. using proper capitalization, grammar, spelling etc. Most of the time it was just all lower case with lots of abbreviations for words/text speak.

For me, it spanned back to the days of playing quake/unreal online, not having a mic and having to type (quickly!!) to my buddies online. Didn't own a mobile back then (then again, few people my age did), but when I did own a mobile, I carried on the same.

Doesn't bother me if someone speaks that way online. As long as I can understand the gist of what they're saying, I'm happy.

Anyway, chill out! tis teh interwebs init.

Ohhh, just to add - I don't really care if I see text speak in a text message. Often I do abbreviate some words myself in a text, as it's quicker to hammer out on the phone (or was, until I got an iPhone).

It is acceptable to a certain extent when sending an informal text, but in my opinion, its generally not good, as it makes the sender look juvenile/stupid.

They must genuinely write everything like that, it's somewhat disturbing that they think it's acceptable.

I did think it was a great demonstration of why you don't go on the motorway on foot though, 6 cars hit him was it?

Well, the above coupled with the textual tributes prove that Darwin wasn't wrong.
On the other side of the coin, I am lazy when typing on a mobile, and will abbreviate, but there is a time and place, for example on this forum, I don't proof read my posts because it's
Just not necessary. And I'm not used to android yet.

To sum up my opinion, there is world of difference between being lazy and/or stupid, and communicating properly.

The boy lived next-door-but-two from my house. There's a constant flow of people to the house, and loads of flowers all over the front garden.

I agree with what's been said and text speak just seems disrespectful to me. But each to their own I suppose.

I for one would be insulted if some sombody left a message like that on my grave. It shows a complete lack of respect, I would rather they say nothing at all.

I don't find it insulting or rude, I just think it's lazy. I always form my text messages using correct capitalisation and punctuation. I do not use 'text speak' ever.

The question was within the context of the thread topic. So obviously not when sending a quick text asking where someone is, but instead writing a tribute message to a lost family member.

I suppose a lot of us are just getting old, but I can't stand it at all. I struggle to decipher those texts in any case and usually just ignore them.

As a tribute to someone it is even worse, I do see the use of it when texting but this is just terrible.

agreed. but i wonder if they even know any better ?

eg 14 year old kids who where born with a mobile in there hand and who's chavvy mum and dad taught them to text using text speak.

Indeed.

Bring back the old days where we used bakelite pulse dialing phones - try doing a text with THAT sort of phone!! :D

A Mod, I will mention no names, has just called me a **** via text message!

How do you RTM a text?

An Aunt?

I think that's pretty poor though, as a tribute for someone to not even take the time to write properly.

I think its disgusting that these people couldnt even be bothered, for once, to write a properly formed sentance to express what they feel after this tragic event.

Lazy and pathetic :(

This.
