Don't like it when the screen brightness is too different to the ambient brightness myself, if the rooms dark I'd turn the light on, if the suns too bright partially shut curtains, etc.
I take the most from natural lighting, i open my blinds slightly but point away from my screen so i get no glare - but having a matte finish screen makes it slightly better
I hve a lamp above me which i turn on during work and play/gaming when it gets dark as i found that with glasses and having just the monitor smack bang infront of me was straining my eyes so i have a "back-light" source to make it better.
Oh and i dont need a light to see what keys im pressing, surely most PC games dont, if they do....shame on you...noobs.
For single player gaming I shut the curtain and turn the lights off in the evening. For multiplayer I used to apply the same as single player but I find I play consistently better if I play with the light on in the evening, better still play in the day when it's light.
I prefer it to be dark when I am gaming, in the day I will always make sure the curtains are
shut otherwise its just a pain when there is a load of screen glare.
At night I will game and surf the net and everything in the dark.
If I focus on a screen in the dark I get a strange thing where my vision shakes left and right really quickly, gotta keep a light on or it gets really bad to the point where I can't read.

I like a little ambient lighting in the background when gaming at night. In day light i roll the blinds down but still have enough light to avoid tripping over something!!!!
I like a little ambient light.. I never quite recovered from when the Wife jumped up at the window whilst playing Doom 3. I had her dipped by the villagers the weekend after
