do you have issues securing holidays from work ?

Have no problems at all. Just booked a week off for the end of March, no bother.

This

Edit: Direct Gov or CAB websites(no link as I was looking ages ago) say that you are entitled to 1 week uninterrupted holiday in 1 year.

I've got Monday off and I booked that last week (technically it is a flexi-day)!

Holidays are fine as long as no more than two of us are off at the same time (out of a team of five) although around Christmas is tight. However going back is a right bitch as you can guarantee that there will be a **** load of work to catch up on. In fact I've got some nasty SQL work to do when I get back... hmmmm.

I work for the Fire Service.

No problem at all. I work in a team of 4, 2 groups of 2. I can't take time off when the other person in my group is off. If the other 2 are in training I am expected to be in work I believe, but not official.

but does he have to sign the holiday form ?

He can't very well refuse you unless he offers you an alternative date.

Book now, all your boss is doing is waiting until it is to late, then he will say, "sorry son you should have booked sooner fraid you aint given me enough notice", check your contract, if you even have one.

Not really, even though i'm a call taking supervisor we're part and parcel of the Dispatch team and as we have 2 people who Supervise they can normally afford to let one of us have time off as they can act someone up to the position or cover it with overtime. Teams at our place are allowed 5 off on leave at any one time (As that then still allows 3 people to be sick before we struggle)

My last job was amazing for holiday, I could pretty much just say I want tomorrow off and they would allow it.

In fact until now I've never had a job where I had to give much notice, I guess the flipside to that is it means I wasn't really needed that much. :D

My current job is in retail so they need a few weeks notice to find cover, its a bit of a pain really as I don't tend to plan ahead that much.

Can't believe some of you have to book all your holidays in the first month of the year. I take it you have some flexibility if something comes up which you hadn't planned for?

My last company was pretty easy with regards to letting me have time off.
It was a simple case of if I had no holiday entitlement left, I didn't get paid.
Can't seem to do that in my current job, it's 20 something days and that's it.
Also not allowed to take time off in school holiday periods.
That bit suits me as I don't have kids and I don't like paying inflated premiums anyway.
Both bosses and other staff have family / kids so fairer if I don't anyway.
I also try to take my holidays over Christmas as this is when we are quietest.

Couldn't believe the first time I tried to take an extra few days for something when I had no entitlement left. It was like the biggest dilemma ever.
The only difference was they didn't have to pay me, which I thought would have worked in their favour.
It wasn't like there was no one else to run the ship, everyone in the workshop can do the same jobs.

Another issue is not being allowed to roll over unused days :( AND if I don't take them, then I don't get paid them. :(

But that doesn't work out too bad with taking time off at Christmas as one week is in one year, the second week I am off anyway (Christmas week) and the third week is New year :D WIN WIN

Payroll told us we had x amount of days left each after someone asked and they had a look, it was all worked out and we were told we had til the end of march to book it all, we had it sorted within about half an hour. Very small firm though, so we just sort of worked it out. I've had a couple of jobs where it's been a complete nightmare to get your holiday.

I never had any issues with holiday booking and I have had like 10 jobs in the last 9 years. However I always give plenty of notice as required ie at least 2 months.

EDIT: request holiday in writing and they must give it to you, speak to someone from the payroll or something and not to your manager as he seems to be a total plunker.

I can also buy holiday and sell 5 days worth every year. Think I will sell 5 days every chance I get as they give a very generous 27 days a year.

My company is quite insistent that I am take them, though if I dont (want to or cannot for a work reason) I get the lost time in pay.

Perhaps this is an option or do you really want the holidays?

Heard of this happening on the continent off my dutch friend. He gets so many days basic but can buy as many as he wants (within reason I assume but he never told me there was a set figure) Seems like a nice system to my eyes, fair too. I would buy myself a few extra days a year.

I can buy up to 2 weeks of holiday a year and sell any unused as long as it doesn't take me below my statutory amount of holidays. I also get no issues taking in general, I can see the times when I'm most busy in advance so book around that!

i dont really have any trouble taking days off where i work aslong as it isnt in the 2 weeks before xmas. but i am just casual labour so theres pretty much always someone who can cover for me.

I've got to get 12 days in before the end of March and my Managers have decided to give me this week off and then they're choosing 7 days in March.
They will make me have them.

I can understand how some employers may drag their heels when it comes to authorizing holidays, in some cases it maybe difficult to ensure there's sufficient resource cover to allow the individuals holiday.

Given adequate notice though there's really no excuse not to be given the days off you've requested as I politely reminded one of the managers at my work, it's not my job to ensure there's enough cover. I'm giving sufficient notice to take holidays entitled to me, they're booked and I'm taking them.

Seems to me some employers/managers like to try and push you just to see how much **** you are prepared to take, know your rights and stand up for them, that's probably the only advice I could offer in this thread ;)

My most recent job gave me 20 days off per year. I worked in a support team of 4 people and we always needed at least 3 out of 4 people at any one time. Therefore as long as no one else has already taken the day that I wanted off, then I was granted the day OK. First come first served, then from there, the rule was 1 week's advance for 1 day off, and 1 month's advance for 1 week off.

My job before that gave me 25 days per year, and because it was a massive 6,000-employee campus, I could take time off pretty much whenever.

I'm surprised that there were a few mentions in this thread about having to book the entire year's worth of days by the end of Jan. Yes, I go to Nottingham Goose Fair which is the first few days of October, so I always book those off, but normally, I don't know what I'm doing months in advance.
