Do you leave your computer on all of the time?

I am courteous to my girlfriend's parents who are allowing me to stay with them by switching it off whenever it's not in use (while I'm working or at night).

All on, all the time, in all locations. (Home and work)

I calculated how much power my home desktop + monitors use and on average its about 6KWh a day, at about 15p per KWh thats roughly £1 a day, so £365 a year just for my PC :(

Must be a Mac, it's an ornament for decorative purposes.

Oh, I went there.

Off when not in use and this has been my policy since my earliest days of PC ownership. To be fair without a dedicated GFX card my current rig doesn't use that much power anyway.

My HTPC remains in standby and uses virtually no power and so doesn't bother me that much.

I used to leave mine on all the time but now that it's got an ssd in there it takes 2 ticks to wake it up.

Also use wake up on lan if I need to wake up and access files.

This. With an SSD, my pc and laptop boot in seconds :) my htpc is always on but goes into standby.

If you have your OS on an ssd then your mechanical hard drives should turn off into a standby mode which throws that argument out the window.

Exactly. My PC, Mac & laptop all power the HDD up and down regularly. MTBF of these devices is well beyond the normal life of a computer.

When I had traditional HDDs I used to leave it on if I was popping out for anything less than an hour just because I'd usually have four or five programmes open that I'd want to use when I got back and couldn't be bothered waiting for the boot sequence and the time it took to re-open them.

But now I have RAID SSDs my PC loads up from cold in less than a minute and programmes open instantly so I turn it off all the time now.

I leave it turned off whenever I'm out of the house or at night when I'm asleep. The only exception is if I'm doing a big download and want to leave it running while I'm away.

Switched on from the moment I get up till I go to bed. If I'm going out for any extended period of time then it's into Standby.

Desktop gets turned off every night. Media/server machine stays on all the time. I would let it go to sleep, but for reasons I've yet to figure out, the network adapter doesn't work when it wakes up and I have restart the machine.

I have a NAS and some networked gear that I leave on. Other than that, it's all off - then again we have laptops at home and no big pc so it's often unplugged anyway.

If I had a desktop pc I'd turn it off. Why waste electricity? Unless you're downloading a particularly large file and leave it on overnight - that brings me back to the times of dial up! :D
