Do you let your young children play video games with mature content?

Well it wouldn't have served any purpose and I don't think kids can have credit cards but any fooh can have debit.

Of course they can, you just need to put them in your name...

Surely if you think they are mature enough to play 18 rated games, they're also mature enough to make sensible decisions regarding the use of credit

I don't accept your premise, I can see how you might have got yourself confused though.

As I said it's against the law to give an under 18 year old a credit card because it represenst a contract and credit worthiness, though not a debit card.

Do you have a point, if so spit it out.

Actually it's not. There's no law/legislation preventing you from giving your under 18 year old child a credit card in your name (as I said in my previous post), in exactly the same way as there is no law/legislation preventing you from giving your under 18 year old child a game/film with an 18 rating.

An under 18 year old cannot (legally) take out credit in their own name, in the same way as an under 18 year old cannot (legally) buy an 18 rated game.

Why do you keep banging on about giving the kids credit cards in my name, why do think it's worth bringing up against my actual actions of giving them debit cards in their name off their current accounts, do you think it is somehow relevant or in some way an argument contra to my position re the 18 cert is a stupid response to momsnet type stimuli or are you still confused?

I think it's you who are confused.

You stated:

"i even got them debit cards so they could buy them online without bugging me to do it."

Presumably in response to the question in the op:

"Do you let your young children play video games with mature content?"

Thereby implying that you are perfectly happy with your children making their own decisions on which games are appropriate for them to play.

In order to point out the discrepancy where you trust your children to be mature enough to make that decision (and feel it is perfectly acceptable to ignore the law on the age restriction), I simply queried why stop at a debit card, and if/why you would feel it was inappropriate to provide them with a credit card?

It seems to have touched a nerve however, so apologies if I've upset you, as that wasn't my intention :)

Some intresting views here, i let my 7yr old watch walking dead with us and he plays zombiecide the board game. I do let him play cod and fps games but i would not let him play GTA V yet. When i was his age i had no restrictions on action/horrors and like some else said i turned out ok lol

So a pretty poor comparison between letting teens buy cod and giving them a credit card with thousands of pounds worth of risk, not very good reasoning there dude.

You were trying to be mr sensible and that 18 certs were a good a valid response to kids playing video games and my allowing them to buy without bugging me was effectively encouraging them to be criminal rather than simply breaching a guidline, poor trolling dude.

We're having the age old discussion with our 9 yr old who's friends in class apparently all play 15/18 or over video games but we have always been fairly firm on the stance of they have age ratings for a reason.

But at the same time I do feel for my son feeling like he's left out when other people his age are talking about them

What do you allow your children to do and do you think your decision has affected then in a negative/positive way?

If you think you feel for your son now, you'll really feel for him when this input leads to behavioral and social problems for him later on. Do not be swayed by peer pressure to allow damaging influences in his life.
