I dont just think that GD is fine the way it is. I like it the way it is. I think that it is nice to come home to a bit of pointless banter of an evening. I have stayed here for so long not only because of the technical side of the boards but because I have made so many friends through this somewhat pointless but ultemately harmless banter.

If smileys aren't used, how else are we to know how a certain post or comment was meant, if it could be construed in several different ways? We can't go by body language, facial expressions, tone of voice.. what else is there? Smileys are useful and .. fun ;)

That's what I said, sir. Posters understood my sense of humour and voted not to include Smileys. Nowadays more and more posters seem to accept my posts as insults rather than humourous. They lack the incentive to read between the lines and take a post at face value. They fail to integrate properly into the OcUK community. 'Tis ok for them to communicate via G33k Sp33k, yet they demand a Smiley. Hostility is the result and needs to be rectified.

I agree with that.

But, sometimes i just feel "ooh i better add a smiley or they will get offended" (not you DD;))

I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with considering how other people will see your post and how they'll take it.. not saying we should all walk on eggshells but we shouldn't assume everyone is on the exact same wavelength as us, or experts at mindreading :)

at the end of the day i first came to these forums (a few years back now) for help and advice.

its the members here willingness to help and offer support with any problem be it software hardware that makes this place good. i think we just need to bring some of that mentality over to GD.

ahh well, GD will become what it will with or without my input. just hope it does not have a negative impact on the other forums here.

So there you go, its official,

To be part of the OcUK community you must understand MYB's sense of humour.

To be part of the OcUK community you must understand MYB's sense of humour! ;) :)

Now which of those is more friendly..as the second is obviously in jest, whilst the first may be taken as an insult.

More seriously though, how on Earth are people new to the forums, or even those who havent seen many of your posts meant to know your sense of humour!!! Text cannot convey emotions, and assuming that everyone will know that you are joking is just silly, hence why smileys were invented in the first place, to convey emotion in a medium unsuited for this.

That's what I'm saying. We all understood everyone else's sense of humour, not just mine. You're just being pickey. Friendliness has been replaced by hostility because newcomers will not take the time and trouble to integrate and understand one another. They've migrated from "just another forum" and conclude OcUK GD to be the same. This post is not about me, but about the attitude of GD posters now as opposed to the past. GD now seems to be a hostile place to me, and I'm sure long term members would agree with me.

Yep I agree.. the top one comes across as blunt / potentially insulting.. the second is obviously meant in a friendly way. Without smileys, and mind-reading, how are we to tell?

Use smileys people!

Purely out of interest,

When you refer to the 'old days' how long ago, and how many users were there of the forum at that time?

I can perfectly understand how the forum could have been that way, my friends and I will often 'insult' each other with mindless banter, with no apologies needed because we know that anything said is in jest.

However, people who didnt know us better thought that we were being deadly serious, and I certainly wouldn't engage in the same idle banter to random strangers as I would my close friends, because the stranger could well be offended by what I said. As a group gets larger, new people join who dont necessarily understand the 'in-jokes', so should they be shunned, or helped to join the community?

I do agree however, that the forum could become more friendly than it is at the moment, however as I wrote earlier I believe the current 'hostility' is due to the emotionally provoking war threads etc, and once these die down the forum will become a lot friendlier :)

As JodieG said why do people hold their old postcount in their location? It seems to be target in which you want to try and break. Who cares if you have 300 or 3000 posts? The people who have 3000 do because they feel they have contributed a lot of their time to a forum and in return want to be noticed as a 1337 poster?. You are one of these people who have their old PC in the location, are you even consciously aware you did that? Or did you put it in there in order for other people to see you were/are a regular poster? I am a regular poster and spend some of my time to browse these forums but I don’t consider my post count to be anything worthy. It creates a 'gap' between regulars which isn’t healthy in the type of threads we see. If a 'n00b' poster does a thread on something most often it is ignored by 1337 posters, but if a 1337 poster did the same post ALL regulars would say something in there....its like separates people.

Ending the PC will put every1 on a level ground; it is easy to see...

Then only loyal posters like me and others will be here because they want to be, not because they want to 'up' their PC and be recognized

:)

Why not? It's hardly proof that people deliberatly spam to get a high count, is it?

It isn't.

What relevence do the reasons for liking post counts have to do with the question that I asked Jodie, which she still hasn't answered, which was 'What evidence do you have to suggest that people deliberately spam purely to get a high post count'?

. You are one of these people who have their old PC in the location, are you even consciously aware you did that?

Of course I'm aware I did it. I hardly did it in my sleep, did I?

Or did you put it in there in order for other people to see you were/are a regular poster?

I honestly cannot remember the reason now. It was over half a year ago. One thing is certain though, it has nothing to do with spam.

Ending the PC will put every1 on a level ground; it is easy to see...

Why would we need to? It's only people like you who seem to think people with high counts are elitists.

Then only loyal posters like me and others will be here because they want to be, not because they want to 'up' their PC and be recognized

We've still seen zero credible evidence that people do this. I for one do not beleive it happens.

The influx of new members was seen as a good thing. It wasn't foreseen that hostility and non-integration would be the result. Whoopee-Doo, we now have 10,000,000 members! GD has now paid the price. Hostility is paramount. You daren't say a word without being pounced upon from members, UBs and Dons alike. It's become an accepted norm. When the Iraqi war has subsided the hostility will not go away. The Iraq War merely brings the GD hostility to the forefront.

I have GD much at heart and would wish to improve it. Ignore my warnings if you wish, but I will say in time to come "I told you so!"

[TW]Fox you and others are obviously are deeply concerned over your PC and don’t want to see it gone...

This is exactly why it needs to go…..If people say there is nothing wrong with PC count then why have it in the first place and why do all the '1337' people seem to be the only ones that dont want to see it gone, because you feel all your time will be for nothing?

I was lurking before the big nuke and registration was closed, and GD did seem a friendlier place to be.

Maybe it is time to close new registrations again, if only to let those who have joined bed themselves in and get to know the community at large.

Only becuase there is no reason for it to be gone.

How is this relevent? PC's dont encourage spam, what exactly is your point?

And as for your sig

'Everyone must be equal!'

Are you a communist? :)

You are the ones calling for change..Do you feel inferior due to your low post count? It would seem so given your new sig. Do you think someone is better if they have a higher post count? Is this why you want it changed?

My point, my friend, is that in a way it does. You dont get 3000+ posts in 6 months without some of it being spam, you have to give me that.

It also like i said above creates a gap between people on the forum.

And as for your sig, 'Everyone must be equal!,' Are you a communist?

No sir I am not a communist, and fail to see how you came to that conclusion? I believe in everyone having a 'level' ground, sir. As being disabled I realise we dont live in a fair world, but we should try to make it as best as we can, now I know this is a forum and not the 'world' but I see this as being fair to everyone not just regulars.

Thank You.

I cannot understand why postcounts are so contentious - it's just a number ffs!!

Should people with big willies be banned from communal showers because less endowed men might be ashamed?

Clearly to some a big postcount represents a huge willy. (On both sides of this argument!!)

..................

I've managed it. I dont post spam, yet i have near that.

Post counts are a number, i dont see what all the fuss is about tbh.
