Do you reckon you can 'reset' your view of graphics?

Do you reckon if you played nothing but SNES games for a year, then played Half-Life 1 it would look amazing, or do you think that once you've played Crysis, Half-Life 1 will always look ****?

:D

I reckon it's possible but I'm not sure on the time scale.

When you think about it, you don't think games past looked rubbish until you play them years later, so graphics aren't something you remember, it just enhances the experience while you play.

Artistic direction will always trump polygon count and fancy effects for me anyway.

There are games fifteen, twenty years old with great artistic direction that look great today imo, and games coming out right now that may be technically impressive, but are grey and bland.

I'd much rather have an interesting game at 640x480 or low polygon count than a generic and dull one at 1080p.

yea most graphics 20 years ago were realistic to us at the time.

looking back wow they are a blocky mess with horrible low res textures.

oldest that I can think of that would still look 'OK' to me today would be kingpin: life of crime
also the level design on Doom 2 is still BETTER then most modern games, im not talking about textures or edges I mean the actual layout/planning of each level

its a lot easier playing old games with 2d sprite based graphics like old amegia and megadrive games than it is playing early 3d games some of them look truly terrible

Having recently gone back through Deus Ex (the original) for another playthrough imo the games content is of more importance than its graphics. Sure, having all the latest bells and whistles is great but if the game is boring and sterile then all the graphics in the world wont save it or enhance any kind of replay value. :)

eh?

Gameplay > graphics.

all the time, i can happily sit here and play super mario 3 all day long and have no affect on me at all as to what the graphics are.

I think you can yeah. I sold my high end gaming PC which could play anything, including BF3, at 120fps with all the bells and whistles on. Only using a macbook air now which has the graphical ability of a calculator but the stuff I play does look pretty good after a while of only playing that sort of thing. Suppose if you aren't subjected to the very best of graphics, you'll accept far less as the norm or "good".

I'm sure it's possible, but it would take time. I was stuck playing Dirt (first one) on Xbox for a week while house sitting. great game, but the frame rate issues and graphics were a constant bug.

This is pretty true imo.

I'd definitely say that a lot of SNES games are better looking than PS1 / N64 games, early 3D games are diabolical.

Edit - Does anyone know where I can pick up a SNES power adapter? I have a massive urge to play Super Mario World now.

I play a lot of Quakeworld (15 year old game) with reduced gfx settings, more than any other game, and it hasn't reset my view won graphics. Something like Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is a 1998 game and looks terrible for example, despite me liking it at the time. Although I'm probably more tolerant than most; most games from around 2000 onwards look OK to me.

I don’t mind the graphics, just give me good gameplay and open world, not a lot to ask...
