This was my first calculator as a kid, not my photo, though I think it is somewhere in my Dads loft. I was the first kid in my school to get a calculator, must have been about 1977.

It's still in use at home. The date is hard to read - it's the first part of the "Date of Supply", and it's "17 XII 77". The only thing wrong with it is that the battery cover won't stay closed. I also have a scientific calculator (Casio fx-85W) which I don't use (explained later) plus a basic four-function at work.

For a start, I learned many years ago that "the right tool for the job" is important. There's a tendency these days for people to select easiest tool, or the one that is to hand, but best is best. Yes, your phone has a calculator, but try using it quickly and you'll see how slow it is. That's why I don't use the scientific calculator I have: it's actually quite slow and non-intuitive. And the work machine is so that if I spill something unpleasant on it, so what.
