The government is considering moving the UK's clocks forward by an hour for a three-year trial period.

It would see the UK adopt Central European Time, with BST plus one hour in summer and GMT plus one in winter.

If adopted, the change would mean that for one autumn, the clocks would not go back, synchronising the UK with much of Europe and meaning that British Summer Time (BST) would effectively continue throughout the winter.
The following spring the clocks would go forward to BST plus one hour, or two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) - something which has been called "double summertime".

The effect would be lighter evenings but darker mornings. What do people think about this?

I'm massively in favour because I like running and outdoor excercise classes after work, so I'd be able to get more in over winter.

Oh yeh, just noticed that ^. It was on front page of BBC news (most read) so I assumed it has been updated..?

Why on earth would we do that, rather than pick which one we prefer and sticking with one of the two we've already got?

It'll massively impact those already suffering from seasonal disorders.

Set it to BST, and don't change it at all. No more summer/winter times. No need to change it.

Have they not got more important things to do than come up with ideas like this?

I thought for a moment it would mean to stop changing the clocks +/-1 hour but reading that it'd still mean we would have to that I can't see the point.

Yeh, I'd be happy with that. Actually my prefs would be:

1) Stick with BST all year round
2) Proposals as per article
3) what we have now.

Also, what is a seasonal disorder?

I think it would be good to put it forward an hour, it will give us an extra hour of usable daylight during afternoon in the winter months.

If they change it from GMT I will blow up a hospital, a school and then use the endangered arabian fruitbat as kindling for my tyre fire.

You know what really ****es me off about this, the country is in disarray, reliance on food banks on the rise, unemployment up, standards of living falling, flood damage, tax avoidance, poor standards of education - lagging behind everyone else.

And some useless *******s are sat about in Parliament having a cup of tea not really doing a lot going "You know what guys, I think we should change the times to be more European, I think that'd be nicer wouldn't it?"

ARE YOU ****ING KIDDING ME?

Right, now I really want it changed so I can see pitchfork on the news losing his ****. Guessing you're a farmer from Scotland?

Using the same system as naming floors surely 1 o'clock should be the first hour that you see each day and then simply go on from there ?

No I'm a psychopath currently living in your attic.

Another thing which annoys me about this, if people wanted this. We'd already have it!
"I want a lighter evening and a darker morning" then do it, nothing is stopping you doing it now. Just because the times aren't the norm doesn't mean you cannot have that!

I swear we need a "thick and slow" bench for these politicians, good grief.

Personally I think it' a great idea, would be lovely to have long light evenigns in the summer rather than it being light in the morning when half the country is fast asleep!!

Sadly though the campaign, although well supported, didn't manage to get a private members bill into parliament to be debated so it all died away.
