Do you turn off your PC when you aren't using it?

Sleep whenever I'm not using it. If I wasn't sleeping it, I'd hibernate it (I used to do this on other computers, and do so for my work laptop). I don't like having to boot up and start programs again.

I always used to leave my computers on 24/7, but more recently my PC goes off at night or if I'm going out for any length of time, especially since going SSD.

Media centre stays on 24/7, but it is Atom/ION based so uses very little when idle.

Server stays on 24/7 and uses a fair bit of power, but I can't really do without it.

Macbook goes to sleep whenever it isn't in use.

Leave mine on 24/7.

Almost got 60 days uptime around Christmas time before I went on holiday. That's on my Windows 7 gaming machine :)

Mines never switched off.

Always have downloades going, and it's nice to have instant access to it for streaming etc.

Could probably save a fiver a month on the lecky bill if I shut it down now and then though.

Never off, left running folding@home. Heating hasn't been on in my bedroom at all this last 9 months and its watercooled so doesn't make enough noise to be a problem

Off. Even switch the PSU off at night.

General web surfing etc I downclock my chip to 800Mhz (with ASUS EPU). It turns all the case fans off and the CPU cooling fan as well so near silent.

Crank it back up to 4Ghz for gaming though. :)

Leave mine on because of people needing to get hold of me but if it goes a couple of hours it goes in to sleep mode also by then im not worried if they want to talk to me ;p

Who lives with parents though??

a lot of people do, I used to live with my parents up until i was 30 because i'm autistic with ocd. It needed a life changing event before i said enough was enough, there could be money issues or ofcause age!. Some people even move back in with parents due a loss of a job and no money.

There is nothing wrong with living with parents aslong as you are not leeching off them 24/7 and at some point you do move out

Who lives with parents though??

at a guess quite a lot of people. I'd love to see the demographic stats for this board.

My rig is off when not in use unless i'm testing something or its busy doing something. EG last night i left it on to test if i would get a 4.5ghz 1.35v BSOD at idle. Result = no BSOD :D

i think the point he was making was that living with parents = not caring about bills.

i think as many people here are mentioning not being able to sleep with it on etc, that they live with parents as others have their pc's in different rooms etc.

i turn my pc off everynight or if i know im out for ages/simply not using it. in simple terms it wastes electricity and with bills ever increasing simply throwing money down the toilet for the sake of having a device on is pretty stupid.

i would have thought we would see the age old argument of 'keeping my pc on helps keep my components living longer' but im glad we havent as thats a crock of ****.

leave it on. need it for my alarm clock. i pay my own bills. surely it cant cost that much to run idle 24/7?

Depends. Mine uses ~150 W when idle (with monitor off), which at 16p per kWh would be 2.4p per hour or £17.28 per month. In that case, I think it'd be cheaper to buy an alarm clock. :p

Obviously using sleep states is far better since you'll be using under 10 W usually.
