today i had to remove the oil sump to retrieve a snapped dipstick. this is the first time ive ever done anything semi technical on a car and i was just wondering how many fellow ocukers do the same?

i felt so satisfied knowing that i fixed it myself and saved £60 quid in the process.

thinking of doing some evening classes in motor mechanics as a result now.

I do bits and bobs, still learning as the jobs need doing. Changed brake fluid last week, and then the back box at the weekend. I can do the engine oil change but elected to do at National tyres seen as though charge £25 which is significantly cheaper than the oil itself.

Although I've got the car booked in to get undersealed tomorrow, that's something I don't want to do. From what I hear it is very very messy and a real pig to do properly.

Yeps, everything from simple oil changes to full custom Forced Induction builds.

I really enjoy working on cars, its all good fun once you've got a good bit of background info.

no, i have absolutely no experience and probably don't have the correct tools to do anything.
and up until the other months, i wouldn't have had the space either

shame really, as it could have saved me well over £1000 worth of labour charges in the last year

Most of the basic stuff I can do myself such as exterior/interior trim, electrics, hoses etc, some I get an ex mechanic mate to help out very handy as he has a pit did the radiator this weekend, some stuff I've had done at "specialist" that only deal with the 300 cambelt and heater matrix to name some.

I do the majority of my own stuff. Being brought up on a Farm has burnt a 'have a go yourself' attitude to most things mechanical :)

I'm going to attempt a cambelt change later this year.. and new clutch!

Yup! I'm doing some bodywork repairs (removing dents before respraying) on my car the moment. I have pics if anyone wants to see my handywork so far lol :D

how old are you? i used to do all that, all the time, day or night, and in the last 12 months ive really lost the thrill of it.

im 27 and im getting lazy with car stuff, i want to chop the golf in for an audi estate (oh.... so you must be older than i am then ;))

Only consumable things like wipers, batteries, screenwash and did change sparkplugs and oil a few times. I'm ok with audio installs and electrics etc..

Going off his profile he is 27 too :p

If I had the space and tools I would do far more, but I do as much as I can with what I have available and without warranty voiding.

When I go the FI route I am heavily considering doing the install myself, by which time I hope to of accumulated the tools I need.
