doctor in liverpool told me that nhs dentistry in "this part of the country" is non existent.

Couldn't get one round here in West Yorkshire. Had to go private. £39 for the checkup on the same day, this included 2 X-rays. Not bad! Had a bit of decay on a back tooth. Had to pay for 2 more X-rays £40. And was told it would be £980 for 2 teeth fixing, crown and a filling no thanks! Decided on having the teeth removed the next day!

Total cost £460 -£200 per tooth extraction.

Madness. Was only in there 25 minutes in total.

Nothing to stop you living in France post Brexit aside from some additional paperwork or are you stuck in the channel in limbo? :D

Erm, there's quite a lot to stop you. First of all, you need to apply for a long stay visa, which is only 1 year max, to do so, you need to fulfil certain criteria. Either already have a job in France, prove you can support yourself indefinitely, or have close family already living there. Your eligibility is by no means guaranteed, no matter how much you think it is. Then you need to apply for residence locally in France, again with no guarantee of success.

I have friends in France and looked into it quite recently. I was there less than a month ago and had a chat about it with one of my friends who is a lawyer. Believe me, going on holiday there is just "some additional paperwork". Going there for <90 days out of every 180 is just "some additional paperwork". Moving to France is not just "some additional paperwork". Far from it. You can't just move there and find a job.

How much is there to stop a French person coming to live in the UK? Quite a ****ing lot. I have a French friend who has lived here for 20+ years who still hasn't got permanent leave to remain post brexit, despite being married to an English person and having 2 teenage British kids. She daren't leave the country because she won't get let back in. It's exactly the same the other way too.

And yes, NHS dentistry is dead where I live. Been here 17 years and have never found an NHS dentist. Even the ones that advertise for patients are just collecting waiting lists.

Hence why people are going back to pliers...

My 73 yo Mother was removed from her NHS dentists books recently for not going for over a year, she now has a wobbly tooth and cannot get in anywhere so has resorted to trying these last few weeks to pull it out herself.

What a state this country is in.

Be a decent son and pull it out yourself for her.... ;)

Can't honestly complain about NHS dental care in my area. We go for our check ups every 6 months, making the next appointment as we have one. Any work needed is usually done within a few days, if not there and then.

They are certainly as good as the private dentist we were with before we moved.

I still have kids. When they have flown the nest I will be in my late 60's. So I doubt France would want me at that age.

Needed some work doing recently and having relocated in recent years, I do not have an NHS dentist. Fortunate I can afford to get it sorted private.

This however, is apparently what the great people of Britain keep voting for, so just suck it up I guess. Go private, do it yourself, or don't vote Tory.

Dentistry, especially NHS dentistry, has been in trouble for years, just seems that this year it's hit a bit of a crisis point where more media etc has started to pay attention.

Yet another reason to avoid sugary drinks and snacks I suppose.

Conservatives never messed it up, Tony Blair did.

Some will kick you off the book if you don't go for a couple of years and many people don't think to go yearly unless they have a problem.

There is also a major issue of getting on the books if you move to a new area, of if your old dentist retires/goes fully private.
They don't 'kick you off', in Scotland and Northern Ireland, the government kick you off, if you haven't signed a registration form with examination every 2 years, in England, the government doesn't even actively register patient's at all, so in theory if its been 3 months they don't have to see you, but most keep it around 2 years.
The situation is dire due to massive underfunding, and its worse in the regional areas, so many many dentists and practices in order to provide a proper standard of care to their patient's will go private, seeing a fewer number, and treating them better, either on plan or for a better level of remuneration.

They won't recruit the dentists they need as the dental number simply doesn't exist, and if you think its bad now, give it around 4-5 years, and you'll find a massive amount of the number will have retired in that time.
I think it is time to wind up NHS dental services altogether.
Have employed dentists, to deal with under 16s and in pain relief clinics, who simply take teeth out, and everything else you pay for, nothing to do with the government, as they've demonstrated they have no clue how to administer anything or future plan or achieve anything in the way of results.

For disclosure purposes, I am dentist, I've worked 25 years, I've in that time never one done a year of less than 90% NHS activity, and frankly now... I'm done. NI dentistry is bloody awful, the fees are appalling compared to even England, and many of the treatments I am doing for patients of 20 years history with me I am doing for zero profit, it can't continue, people need to be paid, people need to earn money. Hilariously do to some way they jig the figures, and have split the old NHS pension into different schemes, I'm going to get a massive tax bill for breech of AA this year. It makes absolutely no sense. A very sorry situation.

Whilst you try to make a wonderfully valid point, 13 years in government of failing to address, and indeed cutting the system further doesn't really strike me as an adequate response to a previously failing policy.

It's not free in France , efficient supplementary health insurance via the company usually helps for inlays/crowns ... and ... glasses.

was on news earlier in year
Dentaid, which usually provides free dental care for the homeless and vulnerable as well as Third World countries will be stationed at the The Thomas Clarkson Centre, formerly known as the Hyndman Centre, in Hospital Road, Bury St Edmunds, on February 3.
