doctor in liverpool told me that nhs dentistry in "this part of the country" is non existent.

Conservatives never messed it up, Tony Blair did.
If only someone other than Tony Blair had been PM in the past 15 years... Maybe even someone from a different party!

If only the Conservatives had been in power at some point in the past 12 years, I'm sure they would have sorted it right out!

You should really stop consuming those hate-filled rags.

It's nation wide but there are some areas which are really bad...especially nhs wise.

My dentist shut down, due to lack of staff, the nearest dentist (both private and nhs) that I could get taken on by (2 years later) was an hour away (lucky to get this)..... and is (relatively affordable) private. On the news a few days ago out of 60 dentists in Norfolk, NONE are currently taking on patients.

My local hospital (King's Lynn), which is one of only 3 'full size' nhs hospitals in my entire county, is basically being held up with 1500 wood and steel props and getting to see a doctor at my local gp is near impossible.

NHS care in the UK, especially where I live, is dire and imo we need to change the NI system to be sort of a 'medical insurance' allowing us to go to whoever is available rather than the current system.

And I'm going to be honest, it's not just the current governments fault, they haven't helped, but this all started a long time ago.

2016: £350 million a week extra for the NHS!

They've had more than that tbh... granted they probably could do with more funds still but other developed countries seem to manage much better with health outcomes and similar budgets. Some of it is perhaps the great British public not exactly looking after themselves too well either relative to people in other countries, we're not as bad as Americans but not exactly great relative to Europe when it comes to obesity etc..

My 73 yo Mother was removed from her NHS dentists books recently for not going for over a year, she now has a wobbly tooth and cannot get in anywhere so has resorted to trying these last few weeks to pull it out herself.

What a state this country is in.

Wat??? That's pretty silly. Why doesn't she just go private or why don't you pay for her to go private, like if your own mother is trying to pull her tooth out, for weeks(!) maybe step in and help her!

Dentists do tend to recommend when you should book the next check-up appointment too, I presume this dentist recommended booking one within 12 months.

She can't afford to go private.

I only just found out, after she had been trying, and I guess they didn't ask because I support them financially anyway and they didn't want to ask for more help.

She was away on and off for over a year supporting one of my useless ****wits of a sister who was having another self induced crisis. She also fell out with this dentist as she said they were overcharging her (charging her band 2 prices for band 1 work) and she was telling me you aren't supposed to be removed from the list for two years of no show? I dont know if thats true or not.

Same in Sweden it's *****.

I just pay if I need a dentist once in a blue moon.

You should get private health insurance in the UK. How much can it be? Less that a RTX 3080 a year..

I went private about 5 years ago. Called up the dentist turns out they had kept me on the books from when I went there 20 years before...
Can generally get an appointment within a day for emergency stuff.
Yes it costs. But its better!

but what about the people that can't afford that? just keep getting infections, keep getting put on anti biotics over and over until a spot opens up? odds are you'll be in hospital eventually since your gut flora is messed up.

I drove past a dentist surgery a while ago and saw a sign saying accepting new NHS patients slammed on the brakes went straight in got signed up, place looked like they had the builders in was clambering over rubble to get to the desk but managed to get signed up, felt like I'd won the lottery.

My mothers 80 and has to go private as there as theres no NHS last bill was over £1000 she's reluctant to go again unless absolutely necessary

Try living in France…. The dentistry over here is utterly amazing in comparison!
In my limited experience this is total BS. I had an NHS dentist work on my teeth and one of his fillings fell out 3 months later so he replaced it. Another 6 weeks later I was on holiday in France and it fell out again (!) so I went to a French dentist and she spent the whole time dissing my previous dentists work, fixed the filling that I had a problem with, charge me fairly handsomely, but that filling has been completely fine since.

I pay £21 a month for Denplan, i get 2x check ups and 2x hygienist sessions a year, any work is done for free (fillings extractions etc) but you pay for any technician work for making crowns, bridges etc

Have experienced exactly the opposite and at least in "my" area the expats plan their trips to the UK around dental appointments (though granted they would be private rather than NHS). YMMV eh!?

don't you people get told to book your appointment for a check-up when you in the dentist or what?

mine always says to book an appointment for however many months time, then they send a text message reminded as the date is closing in, then a day before the appointment the Receptionist will phone and ask if I will make the appointment or not.

I'm guessing people who get kicked off the list just don't bother going a dentist unless they have trouble, likely people with years worth of plaque build up etc

Everyone has known since at least 5-10 years that finding a dentist can be really hard

There's a postcode checker on the NHS website somewhere that tells you which dental surgeries are taking on patients btw, and if you can't find one there's a phone number you can ring

I usually try to go every 6 months, can go for check-up under NHS prices but need to book at least 2 months in advance.

I have the same. Gave up trying to find a NHS dentist years ago and Alston’s has the £21 a month which to be fair gives me the two checkups / cleans each year and anything minor is nipped in the bud quickly and cheaply before it ever becomes a problem. Far too many people fail to take responsibility for their own inaction.

The NHS postcode thing is useless. All it tells you is 99% of dentists aren't taking NHS patients.... then you ring the 1% left and find out they don't update the site, and in fact are not taking NHS patients either.

God forbid you move house either....there's your NHS dentristy gone, assuming you managed to have it in the first place.

Not to mention the scams they run where they spread your treatment out over multiple months, to ensure you pay more than once. Had that with my last NHS dentist before I emigrated.....

Worked great for me last summer
today, for me, (and yest actually) it just says that no one is accepting new patients. got my anti biotics at least, hopefully get an emrg app tomorrow morn and then on to private for an implant.
