I thought I heard somewhare that once windows is installed on your PC that its kinda locked to that mobo ? Is this right ? So like if I wanted to get a new i7 mobo etc would I have to buy a new copy of windows ?

well yes it is BUT it is hardly made obvious when buying that it cant be re used . Ignorant I may be but I really was unaware at the time of buying.
I bought several other oem hardware components for this build and they arent now tied to my mobo !

Cant you phone up Microsoft and say that you had a hardwear malfunction and you had to get a new mb fitted, you might be able to get it unlocked/reset or whatever. Beg and cry if needed. ;)

They aren't locked to anything, but it's simply not allowed to do otherwise, and the copy will say it's been activated before.

As above say you had a malfunction tbh @ activation.

Dont know why I am surprised really microsoft really do take the *#*# dont they. I mean wtf would happen if my mobo had gone **** up ?

If you replace it with the same motherboard and explain the situation over the phone you'll be fine. And thats only if activation didn't work after replacing it. You just can't upgrade it to something newer.

WELL I'M SORRY BUT I THINK THE WHOLE THING WITH THIS JUST STINKS.
I mean come on nothing else in the world is as restrictive as a microsoft product is it. Ok lets take a dvd or a cd for example , Now then I order a new dvd from a well known online dvd retailer , I put my new dvd into my dvd player and watch it fine .....no problem, I then go upstairs to my dvd player in my bedroom put in the disc and press play and lo and behold IT WORKS no it doesnt ask for activation or anything it just works . How is this circumstance any different. My media My dvd players no law broken.
Also the price difference on overclockers at the moment for vista ultimate retail version is £175. the vista ultimate oem version is £143 . Hardly the bargain of the century is it.

From what i understand OEM = that board only, if the board dies and you replace you have to buy a new copy

However your get out maybe to say that your pc failed and you took it back to the shop for a repair, the shop replaced your board under your warantee and used what they had in stock which wasnt the same model

Huh? Its OEM software, its not really meant for people to buy. The whole point of OEM is a discounted software for system builders. Read the EULA before installing it, its all in there. If you disagreed at the time, you could have taken it back.

What components can I change in my system before I invalidate the OEM License?

There is a general consensus that the OEM license is paired with the motherboard. You can generally change any other component bar the case where the COA is attached. If you change the case, and the COA isn't physically attached, this breaks the terms of the EULA. Also, if you do buy a new OEM license, but don't attach the COA, the same applies, you are not licensed. If you change a significant amount of hardware you may be asked to reactivate, but this doesn’t mean that you are necessarily unlicensed. However, you can change the motherboard under a warranty claim if the motherboard was faulty. A warranty claim is defined as replacement of the original board from the company that your purchased it from, under a warranty scheme. You cannot simply buy yourself another board if there was a problem with your existing motherboard and still be fully licensed. If you are simply upgrading for feature or performance enhancements, you would need a new OS license.

which is from the sticky at the top of this forum with Licensing Information in it's title!

This is also asked, on average, at least once a week .... didn't you do a search on the forum?

As for getting a replacement OS, well it depends on the timescale you need it in but there was a thread yesterday which linked to an article about Windows 7 pricing where it stated that you will be able to pre-order Windows 7 from mid-July for £49 for it's October release. If you need sometihng in the interim get a key from MS and download the RC release from them.

If you buy the OEM version, it is clear that it is just made for that PC. Those people who plan to keep upgrading should get the retail version.

OEM is cheaper for that reason, whining about it doesn't change anything.

If you want something free for to last a while, download Windows 7 from MS. It is free to use till I believe June next year, completely for free. And yes, you can play games and whatever fine. If it works in vista 99 percent chance it will work in W7.

You made your choice.

OEM license - cheaper, restrictive
Retail license - more expensive, much less restrictive

No point getting upset about it - you knew the license restrictions before you installed the OS.
Well I'm assuming you bothered to read them before clicking to say you had?
