Does anyone else do this?

I realised the other day that I've never been taught to do this, and barely ever consciously realise that I do it. Then it dawned on me this morning, I do this a lot:

If the crappy illustration isn't clear, basically when you're on the pavement do you quickly weigh up if you should be the one closest to the side of the road? I tend to stand closest to the road if there's a woman walking towards me, or a mother and child. But normally not so much if there's an older man, but sometimes I look out for rings on their finger. It's really weird now that I think about it, but I can't be the only one.

I walk straight, all the time, they can gtfo my way. In Zimbabwe I was the nicest person ever, very chivalrous, but since moving to this country and experiencing the Tube, I am now an angry ****

I pretty much always put myself closest to the road, unless it's a bunch of people messing around, pushing one another etc. because I'd rather not get knocked in front of a car :p

I try to keep such things largely stochastic. Which ultimately ends in the I'll-go-left-you-go-right-no-I'm-going-left-you-go-right-okay-I'll-go-right-OH-FFS-now-you're-going-right thing.

If I am walking along a narrow pavement with traffic coming up behind me then I would expect the oncoming people who can see the approaching vehicles allow me to pass on their right side and I always do likewise.
Having seen a man get his elbow smashed by the ovehang of a large van it struck home how easily this could happen if your back is to the approaching traffic & you are forced on to the kerb by other pedestrians coming towards you.

What about if you get that awkward thing where you both go the same way to avoid each other, then you spend 5 minutes trying to dodge each other.

Gentlemen walk on the outside, nearer the road, although back in the day when people used to chuck the contents of their chamber pot out of the window, they walked on the inside :/

Surely if traffic is coming behind you, then you are on the left hand pavement? And they should let you pass them on the left (their right)?

And yes, this is what I do. If traffic is coming behind me on my right, I always stay left. If traffic is coming toward me on the left, I let people pass on my right, because I can see the oncoming traffic and can dodge any bus wing mirrors.
