Todays random rant :D

Background story : Went to a cinema last night to watch Mario brothers. The film was supposed to start at 6.30pm I got there at 6.30. At 6.30 you would think the movie would start.

But no .. was forced to watch 20 mins of adverts. Then another 20 mins of adverts for films that you would rather be burned to death than consider watching .

Wondering if the 6. 30 start time is false advertising?

If you work in the movie industry I need answers :D

Edit correction : it was 30 mins adverts

Is this the first time you've ever been to the cinema?

They've worked like that for as long as I can remember

Edit - Odeon even explain this on their website:

How much time do the adverts and trailers take up?

Advert and trailer length is typically 15-25 minutes however varies with each performance, and can be considerably less. We always recommend to avoid disappointment you arrive with enough time to enter the screen at the scheduled performance start time.

Plenty of room in the foyer for boxing stance.

they tell you the film starts earlier than it does so they have an audience to see the adverts, so they can charge more to the advertisers.

I respect the hustle though, the way things are going we wont have any cinema's in a few years.

Like ten years ago. It’s like it’s got like 1000% worse

If the cinema had a letter box I don’t want to say what kind of things I will putting through that after last night

My local odeon has a 23 min lead time, I’ve been so many times I got the timing nailed.

It says it starts at 8pm, as was John Wick last night. I start to get ready and leave my house at 8, go there, park up and walk in as the BBFC logo or just before appears.

This tactic does not work for advance screenings. Those starts as advertised.

Also, if a movie says 2hrs long, that includes the end credits.

The one time I listened to my brother and got there to go in 5 minutes after the listed start time, it turned out they'd skipped pretty much everything and the film's title credits were rolling:)

All the other times it's been nearer 30 minutes after the listed start of the program.

Nope, I was a cinema manager 25 years ago and it was like that then...

arg. Someone who actually pulls the strings. ( or used to pull the strings )

Why was done ? I suspect financial incentives but have Cinema audiences not suffered enough ?

ps I just noticed I spelt cinema wrong on the thread title

What do you mean why is it done?

Advertising brings in money. Trailers to tempt you to go back. It’s all about money baby.

It’s not about “suffer”, you make it sound like it’s the concentration camp and you can’t get out lol “suffered enough”, you choose to be there, no one force you to be there. It’s a few ads and some trailers, some people love the trailers. Suffered enough lol

Also, there are always people who turn up as the movie starting time and then imagine you sit and watch the film and for the next 30mins lots of people come on with their phone and flash on trying to find their seats.
