Does anyone here work at the pictures (cinama)?

Just one of the reasons I don't go to the cinema anymore.

Likewise - not been in awhile but it used to be ~15 minutes before the "start" time and ~15 minutes at the start they'd show ads, etc. by nature I like to be well in time for stuff - I quickly learnt you could just turn up 15 minutes later and still get in and skip most of the **** but even so it puts me off going.

EDIT: When I was a kid used to be some decent trailers and short features which were actually interesting, at least as a kid, more lately it was much more ads and **** trailers, etc.

Last cinema film I saw was the inimitable Burton in Under Milk Wood.

You pay to see a film, not adverts, advertisers should pay YOU to view their wares. If what I am reading here is right then I could get behind a few riots in cinemas. What's next, pubs open 30 minutes before they serve beer, the 30 minutes is given over to advertising random stuff? Visits to the barber? The doctor, (should you find one in person)? I'm surprised the Yanks haven't shot a few places up, they seem to do so for far less <LOL>

One of the reasons I bought my first home cinema in 1994 and haven't looked back.

We go now and then, because we miss that looping exploding ball of colours.

I rarely go anymore but seeing Top Gun Maverick on the big screen was absolutely phenomenal and reminded me why cinemas exist, just a shame we have so few films to make use of the potential.

My last dentist when they went private replaced the relaxing screensaver thing on the ceiling mounted display for ads, mostly for their additional products but also other ads in general. (They then used the first excuse they could - not going during COVID - to remove me from their NHS books...).

I think you'll find they generally say that the programme starts at 18:30, not the film itself.
That was
Pretty much this. I worked in a Cinema almost 40 years ago but back then they did give you the times of the full progamme on the board outside (start of the programme, a short film, Trailers & Adverts Intermission then the feature) that was my job to put the times on the board! I Think those times are past now because they (Cinema bosses) tell you the programme start time you you have to endure the adverts. My advice is to get there right at the start then buy your snacks drinks (Expensive so bring your own & hide them in your coat)

Also in the "arrive 15 minutes 'late'" camp here. You do have to be careful on the late evening screenings though. Don't mind the trailers so much, it's the adverts that **** me off.

The short lived Warner Bros chain prided themselves on the film starting when it was advertised. Although the only one I've ever been to closed 25 years ago so maybe there's a lesson there. Or maybe there isn't.

arg. Someone who actually pulls the strings. ( or used to pull the strings )
Well, not really. It always amuses me what decisions people think are made by managers, when it's decided much further up the chain. (I was a Supermarket manager for much longer - "why don't you sell this any more? Why have you moved the yogurts to this place? Why do you have less staff than last year?") Each movie had a strict list of what was on before it, specific adverts and trailers. The manager wouldn't even see this list it was done by the projectionists each week.

Well, that's who I worked for (for a few years and then we became Warner Village) and we did as everyone else, the time given was the programme time. I vaguely remember maybe we published the movie start time too though?

The one time I listened to my brother and got there to go in 5 minutes after the listed start time, it turned out they'd skipped pretty much everything and the film's title credits were rolling:)
I went to my local indie to see Dune when it was released a couple of years ago. Whilst we were having a drink in the bar beforehand the usher guy came out and told everyone that there won’t be any ads and he’ll tell us when they’re ready to start. That was nice.
