Does anyone not do Christmas?

Depends what you mean by celebrate. I won't be in any churches or giving any consideration to a guy called Jesus.
But I'll be celebrating the secular traditions of exchanging presents, feasting, spending time with friends/family and enjoying the season. I've been consciously trying to refer to it as Yule this year to make the distinction. Christians are welcome to Christmas, but it's not what I do.

I have for a long time been a miserable bugger, and have always disliked Christmas.

But as I continually age, and presumably will continue to do so, I find that my family is slowly coming back together, at least parts of it. And so even if I don't like the commercialism and crassness of Chrismas itself, I can begin to appreciate the one time of year some of us get together for a couple of days :).

I don't celebrate Christmas or any other holidays for that matter. The only holiday i "celebrate" is guy Fawkes and that is for almost blowing up parliament, better luck next time my old friend...

I will still play a long with going to family and even buying presents. But I refuse to engage in the traditions of the tree or the lights or the music. All of that stuff kind of annoys me and i find it quite disturbing that everyone goes a bit crazy and puts up plastic pine tree and puts stuff on it. Although recently i have even stopped engaging in the tradition of gift buying, i find it is a waste of money on both sides. I get crap i don't want and i give crap that they don't need. I had a Christmas off as well, where i did not engage in any activity to do with Christmas and it was great, i enjoyed it.

I am sure at some point in the future the primitive traditions of the past (now present) will be a story that children and adults laugh at.

And don't get me started and the stupid santa myth and all the problems associated with that, don't want to ruin your day :D

I am an athiest, but Christmas is still celebrated, but not for the reasons it was intended, its more an excuse nowadays than a celebration of the birth of Jesus. We still do all the "Christmassy" things, put up a tree, get an advent calendar, buy gifts, have a Christmas dinner, etc. But the meaning of Christmas is lost on us, but then again, it doesn't really have a place here.

Thats how its always really been in my family, and I suspect, many, many others around the UK.

Just my opinion, and I won't criticise others who see it much differently.

Its changing into more of a tradition in the UK, than a date of religous significance.

Not really, I do the present swap, singing songs and the compulsory horrific visits to the family....

I actually went to church last year because the gfs family is religious enough that they go to church and I went with them. But hey it was fun singing the carols!

FWIW I absolutely love Christmas :) Love spending time with loved ones, family and friends. Then again I love any celebration that allows me to spend quality time with family and friends. Look forward to the day I have children of my own to celebrate Christmas with. :)

I dont, I am not Christian so I don't see the point.

However my new wife sees it differently so I "celebrate" it with her and her family (they are also not Christian).

To be honest the whole history of the midwinter festivals through all its incarnations from pre-history through the Christian highwater to it's current version is so interesting it would disingenuous to our ancestors to not at least have a bit of a shindig this time of year :)

oh man, such a good word.
I just can't understand people who moan and groan at this time of year. It's great, what ever you celebrate or lack thereof.
A few of us. Do shift work, yet around Christmas we've already met up for 3 big nights and have a couple more planned. You wouldn't get that at any other time of year.

i celebrate present swap. it's like christmas but without all the gay songs

This made me lol. Although I have a mate who has recently ousted himself as gay so I try not to use it as an off-hand comment about him.

...Just to add he is coming around to the better half and mines place for a few gay songs for the afternoon :p

I think most people who don't celebrate it see it either as:

1. An unnecessary commercialised event focused on manipulating consumers into purchasing material goods in order to enrich the retail sector. This manipulation occurs through the illusion of religious significance (which in fact is not correct according to a number of Christians), as well as the fairytale figure of Santa Claus, combined with coercing the population into believing that Christmas is the one time of the year to be nice to others and when miracles occur - somehow making the rest of the year...something else.

2. An event that was never celebrated as part of their childhood, therefore holding no significance whatsoever.

Couldnt have said it better.

I'm no longer a fan. Havent been for a number of years now. The way retailers sucker people into this event is amazing, clever too.

Its my Birthday on the 25th... so I celebrate that!! :)

YAY!!.. I finally found someone else!!!...

Did/Do you get:

a, two BIG prezzies,

b, two Medium sized (same value as any siblings put together),

c, one BIG one (same value as the two BIG prezzies),

d, two small prezzies (equal in value to any siblings etc..).

for me as a kid it went - a, then as a teen a mixture of b, & c, then from 20 onward d, or money!!

Sim :)

I am atheist, so obviously don't see it as a celebration of christ. I just see it as a time of year you put up fun christmas lights, have time off from work / uni and give and receive presents with the family.

So basically all the fun bits of christmas without having to go to church. :D

How do you value your siblings?

Me, personally I go on the yearly market goat value that I get offered when travelling through Egypt. It probably isn't the most reliable way of valuing my siblings but I find that I tend to overstate the price if taken on my own perceptions of their value.
