Does anyone NOT use an anti-virus program?

Dear Agony Aunt,

My friends tell me that if I sleep with a load of girls and don't use a condom that the chances of me getting a STD is slim if I know when to pull out.

Or are they talking crap?

quoting one of my mates.. (he said this to a girl..)

"the rhythm method is the safest, my mum told me"

A decent AV setup as 'Modified, Scan on Create' will use VERY little clock cycles/system resources. Using a PC without one is pretty stupid tbh unless you backup your DATA every night, otherwise you cannot value the DATA on your computer much?!?!

When was the last time you saw a destructive virus? They are all about capturing your data these days not wiping it clean. And in that respect your better off with a decent leak proof firewall than AV software.

Agreed. I use Comodo firewall and common sense. I admit to sailing close to the wind occasionally with some of the stuff I download, but when I do I manually scan it!

However, if I shared a PC I reckon I'd use a memory resident scanner of some sort. I'm often called upon to dig someone out of a malware hole, and it always seems to be somebody else who put them in it....

I don't at home.
I have a firewall on my router but the Windows one is enabled.
I have your bog standard ant-spyware malarky but that's it.
No antivirus or software firewall. Very infrequent adaware, which picks up cookies at worst.

No need.

Never used one, never had a virus.

And you shoulda have seen some of the weird, dodgy, and somewhat dangerous stuff I have run/looked at on my PC... comes with the territory of a researcher/developer...

Don't use antivirus/firewall/windows updates.

Stupid really, as I got my first virus in 5 years 3 weeks ago! Got rid of it almost immediately, but it had propogated on network hard drives, and so retained itself there, and so messed with my system again...

Got rid of it all after 4days and all is well!

Back to no antivirus.

I use wireless and no firewall/antivirus, hack me!
Same here, wireless home network, not even encrypted. If someone really wants to sit outside my house and use my broadband, let them...
No AV software or ad-blocker stuff. If you're daft enough to click on dodgy pop-ups or emails, you deserve all you get. Same goes for storing personal info such as bank details on your pc, seriously, why would you anyway?
You can tell pretty much straight away if something's hogging your system resources and you can usually get rid manually. The worst-case scenario involves an Acronis re-image of the OS which takes all of 3 minutes.

Since switching to Vista I haven't bothered to reinstall NOD32.... I haven't had any problems.

When you have to option of so much antyvirus software (some free) it would be nuts not to take up on the service just for peace of mind. I understand that all the firewalls and other bits (new opperating systems) have extra security but how long before this is out smarted, plus no uprades are available in you hardware (routers for example). free software upgradeable so why not.

The mind boggles as to why people run their machines connected to the internet without anti-virus software. Malicious code can be injected into sites you would think were safe. Using an anti-virus uses hardly any cpu cycles/memory and there are plenty of free ones. Just because you haven't had "any problems yet" doesn't mean you won't have and aswell just because you haven't noticed anything strange doesn't mean you don't have a keylogger running or something else in wait.

You could have AV software AND a keylogger running. You are aware that AV software is not infallible, especially the free ones... Just because you have AV software does not mean you wont get a virus... The detection rate is not 100%.

I run a free AV and Software firewall to stop 'phone homes' because my hardware firewall doesn't do this.

I think people are quite sad when they don't run AV because they are scared it takes CPU cycles :p

There are free ones out there and adds an extra line of defense.

If people think the 'Task Manager' is going to show them if a key logger is silently running they are clueless :p

Next time you type in a password you might wanna think twice, because trust me, I know ;)

Viruses that format hard drives is just silly old stories. Stealth is the common theme nowadays. The longer these 'viruses' as we call them can stay on your PC without being noticed the better for them it is. It wont really infect or affect your PC. But it sure will be sending stuff back to base of your activities and usually everything you typed. So next time you by something over the internet, or stocks/share dealing over the internet etc by Credit/Debit card, you should really think twice.

Indeed you are correct, but do you admit that "some" protection is better than none?

TBH *Touch Wood* I have only had 2 viruses try and get me in the past year, One was the old "Hey is this you? Click Here" MSN Virus, which I did not click. The other came in a file a friend sent me, turns out they dont have an AV, but it did no harm so :D

Even though im hardly ever exposed to Viruses, as im very carefull with my PC I would still say its essential to have an AV, just in case the worst should ever happen! I use NOD32, its a great program, and uses very few system resources (Save when scanning) Much better than Norton or the like ;)

No antivirus program here, firewall on the router blocks all ports inbound and outbound so no need to worry about trojans turning my computer into a bot. In the unlikely even of me downloading a file from a suspicious website called virus.zip, then opening it and running the exe file, it then damaging the os, I can simply restore everything in about 5 mins using an image.

So what happens if you visit a seemingly safe site with injected malicious code which installs a keylogger on your pc without your knowledge?
