Does anyone on this forum consider themself as being " woke "

Jesus spoke way too much sense to be considered woke. I'd listen to his podcast when he returns anyway. In fact, it could actually be Sam Harris.

You doubt what? That Jesus can't be Sam Harris?, or that Jesus wouldn't have a podcast?
Sam Harris is one of the four principle New Atheists, so if he is the second coming of Jesus Christ, he’s doing a good job of hiding it. :D

I like the idea though, I reckon there’s legs in starting that rumour on Reddit.

[..]On another point, anyone who thinks "woke" could be applied to a person killing a.n.other race "because it would make their country better" is being disingenuous at best. "Woke" isn't about what is "best", it's about what is "just" or "fair". We might disagree on what "just" means but no-one could argue it is "fair" to kill one race to make another "better". That is manifestly unfair.

To you. Not to some people. As you say yourself, people might disagree of what "just" means. And you are absolutely and indisputably wrong to state that "no-one could argue it is "fair" to kill one race to make another "better". There are people who have done exactly that in the past. There are people doing exactly that in the present. People who have taken part in genocides have stated exactly that. It's usually at least part of the stated reason for genocide. Pick any genocide you like and study it in any detail, looking at the propaganda and statements relating to it. You will find that position. It's pretty much inevitable - if a person accepts the idea that <insert group here> is the thing that is making things worse then it's completely rational to conclude that eradicating <insert group here> will make things better.

To me "woke" means being aware and cognisant of the bigger picture. Being aware of global racial and colour prejudice and believing it should change. It's being aware of how words and actions can be offensive to others and trying to avoid hurting other people's feelings. It could be something as small as not swearing in front of your mother or kids, not smoking in the house, not putting a burning cross outside your neighbour's house. It's about moderating your own life to avoid negatively impacting someone else's.

But it's also about saying to people who have already benefitted "maybe you should allow some of your position to be redistributed". Not so that everyone is exactly equal, but so that things aren't so unequal. Isn't that what the UK's tax system already does and aren't we all broadly OK with that?

There's a big difference between punishing people for being the wrong race, sex or whatever and taxing an individual based on that individual's wealth.

The greatest trick Sam Harris ever pulled was convincing the world Jesus didn't exist. And like that – poof – he's gone!

Here's a thing. I didn't even know what woke was until I read this thread. Kinda not feeling any better for it though.
I think I'll stick to being a 50 yo white male.

And yet people on here claim Hitler was a socialist and none of you right wingers say hold on. Go figure.

I'm left wing enough to think that communism is a good idea(*). I'd probably qualify as a socialist. And I consider it roughly reasonable to say that Hitler was a socialist. More accurately, he rejected the simplistic left/right spectrum and especially the left/right false dichotomy. He picked positions from what people who believe in that spectrum or dichotomy would consider both "left" and "right". Including some that were socialist.

Ill assume most of you think Jesus was 'woke' anyway and to be despised.

You assume all sorts of things. Some of them might even be true, sometimes, by coincidence. But probably not that one.

Personally, I think that we don't really know anything about Jesus. What we have is edited selections of organised propaganda written later (some of it much later) that were claimed to be attached to Jesus in some way. An extremely unreliable source. But I don't recall any examples of the Jesus character (who might or might not be like the person to any degree) preaching racism, sexism or other irrational prejudices, so I wouldn't regard them as "woke".

* Note that I said "idea". Communism is a terrible thing in practice, at least at any scale larger than a very small commune.

I think you might be right about that. Stranger things have started on Reddit.

One thing I love about woke people, is the number of conversations online where, after a few disagreements, they will turn around and say something like,

"I've tried to help you, but you aren't listening. Going to put you on ignore, now."

There's a certain fragility to many of their arguments, yet coupled with a complete insistence that you accept their position, in a fairly short timeframe. Otherwise it's head in the sand time.

Can be fairly frustrating if you're trying to explore their opinions in good faith.

Also have to chuckle at the assumption that if you aren't in agreement you need some kind of help or assistance to come to the correct viewpoint :p
