i have this thing where i prefer a quiet system, so i tend to turn down the fan in msi afterburner, but i forget when in game to turn it back up, so i load tf2, go for my tea come back and its doing that random blowing where its trying to cool down, i slam fan back up, but its been at 105.c for about 20 mins now, done this a few times, now i used to get around 180-220 fps on tf2 maxxed, maybe more, now when in battle i get around 80-90, have i damaged my card ? is there something i should do ? or do you think it might just be cause i need to defragment, discussion is welcome :)

Best is to put a fan back to normal and start up a bench or furmark and see if anything comes up.

105c is quite high and something might have gone wrong but if anything were, it won't be just lower FPS. Instead you'll have artifacting or other kind of issues.

Is the FPS difference in exactly same scenario ? If you play online it might be any updates / patches or even internet connection problem.

Also not that there is any difference in gameplay between 80 and 200fps so it's not a big deal, try other games and some benchs and see how they run.

There are various bench threads on here with same GPU as yours so you might compare with other people and that will give you an indication if anything is wrong.
+-15/20% should be alright in a similar system but if you bench and see similar systems doing 30-40% better then your card is screwed.

I thought I had cooked my old 6800gt when the stock cooler's fan died, low fps and high temps. I fitted an Arctic Cooler and all was fine with a bigger OC as well so +1 for replacing the Tim

Why not set a custom profile in Afterburner so you don't have to do anything manually?

Temperature should be fine, since the card will throttle back to remain below threshold, typical threshold temps on cards are around 120C.

Defragging is unlikely to do a thing.

Perhaps you've just burnt/dried out the TIM. Have a look and replace if needed.

this might be the case, am i daft in asking if you can use the same as youd use on a cpu, and what can i use to clean the old stuff off ? if someone could likt to something on this site it would be great

All modern cards CPUs and even psu's have heat protection. They will shut down throttle or both. As said above u got to cool that sucker down. Switch off ur comp and let it cool.

I doubt u damaged anything but u should avoid doing what u just did. They got protection but this is last resort. These are delegate components after all....

If u wanted a quiet gfx u chose the wrong card matey...

the card is so damn loud when left on auto, sucks, doing nothing for my pc except bringing up the ambient temps and sucking on my electric bill, should i opt for the ati side of things ? one thing i can say about my 470gtx is its never failed with fps and drivers have been incredible, never any problems. just thinking an upgrade to a 6970 would be a good idea, maybe quieter, but ofc theres no info on TDP or anything.
