Does something need to be done about dogs?

Who said there's nothing to see here and everything is fine (apart from you)? It's made national news, of course people have taken notice.
Dog attacks on postal workers is an issue. I think any dog owner who allows their dog to do this should be heavily punished.
It's the owners who could prevent it and if there were real penalties i'm sure it could help prevent it.
I bet a fair proportion of attacks are by the naturally aggressive breeds with d1ckhead owners, who should be banned from owning a dog in the 1st place, nevermind the breed being banned.

Literally the poster before you who said it's not a problem

Ok, apart from him/her :p

I can see their point, 5 attacks per day from the literally many millions of house visits per day of thousands of postie's is not an epidemic, but i can see your point too and agree it is an issue that needs sorting out through education and real punishment.

The problem with this is that it bans owners or fines owners AFTER someone has been hurt. We need preventative, not punitive measures.

Some people have mail boxes that are really hard to push things through.

Off topic but I've seen a trend with doors who have the post slot at ground level near the bottom of the door.

This must be:

A) Really annoying for the post people, having to bend right down.
B) More likely that even the smallest dogs can also bite

Yeah sorry but I think I could post letters though a letter box without my fingers dangling the other side. If not you don’t get post. It really isn’t rocket science.

We put a cage around the indoor side of the letter box to prevent the dog shredding the letters and in case the postie dangles their fingers through the letterbox. My dog used to hate the postie but through training doesn't bat an eyelid when mail is delivered now.

@IvanDobskey the monster

Nobody needs fingers, right?

My mates postie was banging on their door recently and had a go at him for their dog biting his finger. It was quite a bad wound, blood on the door, doorstep, dripping off his finger.

It did rather confuse my friend as they don't have a dog...turns out it was the cat!

Ban cats I say!

Do you have some impairment which stops you from following conversations or something?

Claim - 'Postman should refuse to deliver to addresses with dogs unless they are kept in'
Response - 'Most probably get bitten through the post slot'

Point of post? Most dog's are already "in"

Were there cases of people losing fingers? The report doesn't give much of a breakdown of what is considered an attack.

The main story they focus on in this report is obviously horrific, but a better breakdown of these statistics, rather than just where they happened on the property, would give us a better picture.

I.e. could a dog standing and barking "aggressively" at a postie be reported as an attack or does it have to have made some form of physical contact? What if it paws the posties hand through the letterbox and causes a light scratch?

Daily Mail doesn’t usually let facts get in the way of a good story.

Later on it gives more details. Seems @VincentHanna only a minority of these were bites through letterboxes
