Does something need to be done about dogs?

Agreed, legislation to prosecute the owners for failing to control their animal, surely should go down as GBH for injuries, manslaughter for deaths.

I don't think it will help. It's a bit like holding adults responsible for what their kids do. Sounds like a great idea, but most owners or parents never think theirs will do anything bad.

And another, going to be interesting when details of the breeds are released, 100% betting its a golden retriever responsible..........
Asserted to be Cane Corsos, as confirmed by a completely reliable witness statement.

It's not going to hurt either as, unlike children, owners are considered legally responsible for what their dog does. This would just be a heavier penalty.

Cane corsos are really nice dogs, but the breed is being trashed by chavs, cropping their ears, docking tails and training them to be aggressive, or not training them at all.

Arguably they deserve a heavier penalty anyway, but I still don't think it would stop these incidents happening. What we are really doing is asking the stupid to get intelligent - it's not going to happen.

I think the only way you could do this is on a per breed ban, and the only way you are going to implement that is on a licence system that enforces microchips - any dog found without a microchip is destroyed. Microchips are only supplied by vets and there is a £10,000 fine for putting one in a banned breed.

I mean it's harsh but it would get it done.

Compulsory registration and chipping is probably the way forward, with seizure and immediate destruction of non-chipped dogs.

The issue is, as with so many other things, is this requires enforcement and is therefore an additional burden on policing/ local authority services.

If Costa from licencing chipping and fines are correctly allocated it could easily be self-sustaining.

That was part of the loooooong discussion earlier in this thread - People already ignore the breed ban and the dogs are generally only found following an incident.
All a ban does is encourage cross-breding to get around the technicalities, and for the scum to move on to using other breeds for their status dogs.

These are all just symptoms, though - The root cause is the desire for a status dog. If you can make such things very unfashionable, that'd be a bigger step.

It already is compulsory.

I highly doubt any of these people have £10k to spare, the bailiffs might get an old plasma screen TV and PS5.

It doesn't cost £10k to chip a dog.

The big cost is the enforcement teams and the resultant legal costs.

Not to mention the public relations nightmare of "Ethel, 82, looks sad while holding photo of dead pooch- "he was my only friend". "

Well, I didn't know that! Thanks.
Has been law since 2016 that all dogs over 8 weeks must be chipped, and various info about the dog, together with the keeper's details, are registered on a database.

It doesn't cost £10k to chip a dog.
He meant these people couldn't afford the £10k fines, which means that useful funding source for enforcement cannot be relied upon.

Yeah, that and the fact that some loser who wants a dangerous aggressive dog doesn’t want to get the dog chipped anyway, because they already know they’re breaking the law, and on the balance of probabilities- they probably won’t get caught anyway

Wish there was more that could be done about dog barking. No one seems to give a toss about it. But it’s hugely intrusive and unfair on everyone else.

Also seems to be a real increase in people not picking up their dog turds

I think the sort of thing noise pollution teams would take care off, but I know in my council that team has been gutted out now.
