Does something need to be done about dogs?

I thought dachunds are one of the most aggressive and nasty breeds out there. Like most things dog though, they are little yappy runts that don't pose that much risk to people vs bigger dogs so their behaviour is ignored mostly.

Wtf, they're worse than kittens. I've had three of them and not one would hurt a fly. Think of them as alarm dogs, if someone trespasses on your property they just tell the whole postcode :D

My son is absolutely terrified of dogs. 99% of them and their owners are fine though just walk past no drama.
But you get the odd one that wants to approach him or is off the lead and comes running over. He'll scream so loud it wakes the dead.
Trying to explain to some of these owners that not everyone likes your dog or that some people also have issues that make them feel this way just goes on death ears. It's not going to be long before I kick one of these dogs away if the owner refuses to move it.

I don't think dogs have got worse in anyway, but owners have, you get some that have not put any effort into training their dog and don't care where it goes when out and about. I don't want it anywhere near me.

It's two fold, as you say the owners are definitely on average worse but also there are so many of them!

Very close to giving the owner of a Doberman a slap around this way. There's a church green where he just lets it off the lead and then stands there not paying any attention to what it's doing.

My wife was out the other day with our baby and the dog, and it's ran over and pinned our dog down. The bloke didn't seem to give a **** and then started yelling at my wife as he's obviously the type who doesn't like being told when he's not behaving properly.

He'll get a clip if he tries that on the next time I see him, the scruffy ****. Nearly 40 years old, unemployed, smokes weed all day and, judging by the constant stream of videos he posts on Facebook, still hasn't left school.

Kicking a dog in front of your kid is not going to teach the kid anything expect hitting animals is OK. You need to slap the owner instead as they are the ones allowing it.

I suspect a large number of people who ended up WFH/furloughed through covid, and decided that was a good time to get a dog with no experience, no further research, and no forethought...

Why is he terrified of them? Often children pickup their fears and phobias from parents.

He probably does pick up some of it from me, I was bitten by my friends dog when I was a child and just don't trust dogs anymore and rightfully so there's an old guy walks his dog near my home and if I'm on my bike the dog will attack me and try to bite my leg, he's not interested.

But he mostly doesn't like things approaching him he once screamed when an old lady rubbed his hair (both our children have full on ginger hair so they attract old people) she was mortified and thought she'd hurt him.

Nextdoor (rented) bought a small dog breed, a pup and that's finally grown up but they leave it alone for periods (like commute drop off etc). I don't think the rental agreement allows dogs but that's not my business.

It seems to be shut into the lounge over night with a pair of French doors. It paws and bangs on the doors when it thinks it hears them getting up, and I think now it associates the pawing/banging of the doors as a method of summoning them. It does this every morning. The banging of the doors and rattle comes straight through the walls - our stairs are on that wall and so the wall shares with my office etc so any movement from me causes it to think there's someone to call by banging the doors..
They also leave the bi fold doors open so any time in the garden sets it off too. Normally one or both are working from home, the dog seems to be relatively quiet, it seems very happy and jumpy at people that it meets.

The local cat (not our cat) that frequents our garden sits quietly, looking in that general direction and I swear it's smiling at the howls and distress. It certainly doesn't seem fazed - it actually sleeps against the fence between us and the neighbours in the shade under one of our bushes.

I sometime wonder if pet owners should have a formal course - like how to teach the dog not to be a complete basket case due to being left alone, being social and etc. The same with dangerous dogs - socialising them and learning to control them.

Owners like this need a few life lessons themselves on how to behave and socialise etc before they’ll ever understand why they weren’t ready to own a dog.

Noticed some people are buying dogs just for security. I was looking at some home security discussions lately as I have been adding cameras, and alarms, and the vast majority of people were saying get a dog, to be fair was a few who said, one shouldnt get a dog just for security, but they were a minority.

Someone needs to work out the CO2 cost of all these dogs and their associated paraphernalia, the toys, food, all the logistics of shipping it everywhere.

Then people need to make the eco argument for people to stop with it. They are a frivolous luxury item to most people except those used as working dogs, guide dogs, sheep dogs, gun dogs, etc etc.

ChatGPT reckons the UK produces 417 million tonnes of CO2e Emissions (2022). And dogs account for roughly 1.3-4% of that. It's a lot. Apparently all UK domestic flights are 1.5 million tonnes, dogs are 10.2 million tonnes.
