Does the "deep web" really exist?

Any VPN is considered deep net?

I don't really see the point in the term to be honest, having a closed network goes against the very nature of the internet anyway.

so how come it seems only people involved with illegal activity actually knows how to operate all this? How did they learn about it?

I would imagine its a case of needs must, necessity being the mother of invention. Dont doubt how clever people can be when theres gain to be had.

Depends on your definition of deep net really, if its simply whatever is beyond the scope of indexing, then yes I cant see why not.

The internet was designed to be 100% anonnymous and fed by user input, a free utopian society if you will. These are by no means (necessarily) closed networks in the vast majority.. they just dont shout about them from the rooftops.
Saying this goes against the 'nature of the internet' is about as ironic as it gets

The problem is that a lot of people use Hidden Wiki as their gateway into the deep web - but most people are too scared to then follow the links presented there. A lot of it is illegal material/discussions - and links to communities. I wouldn't be surprised if Hidden Wiki itself was somehow controlled by the authorities and decoyed to deter people from venturing further and getting so they get the feeling that they've filled their deep web fix. After all, it shouldn't be as easy as running Tor and pasting in the URL.

A lot of the really interesting stuff is most likely on Usenet anyway.

No it wasn't, it was based on technology to improve communication in scientific facilities and then found big backing from the military to ensure their communication could survive large chunks being ripped out of it.

Some of the stuff there looks pretty dodgy to be fair. I wonder how you access the really low level stuff.

Yes it does.

I love how a few days worth of image macro spammage on 4chan have resulted in lots of unsure posts on normal forums around the web. Jolly good show!.

So what makes this "deep"? The fact that it is not indexed? The fact that you need a specific user agent to access it?

Surely there are lots of private networks operating (using VPNs etc) using the internet as the channel, how is this any different?

I just read through some of the pages on that BB link someone posted...

All i'm going to say is that even reading about what they had seen made me feel uncomfortable.

A lot of it relates to CP; how to kidnap, file sharing etc.

Mind = blown.

I've just read the BB thread and I really want to investigate the wiki but probably not wise. The idea of there being forums that discuss child kidnapping and stuff like that is so bloody weird it's fascinating.

I fired up tor and got to the wiki but didn't dare do anything other than read a few chapters. Very dodgy links on there.

Exactly why I was reading / why i'm tempted to install tor and work behind 2 proxies.

It's odd, this whole underground society exists that 99% of the general population know nothing about. I always wondered where all this material was shared, how come the government have a hard time tracking it etc, makes sense I guess.

Staying WELL clear of the child related material though, utter disgusting.
