Does the PS3 upscale SD DVD's ?

The PS3 upscaler is fantastic, it puts my 360 (may it rest in peace) and my upscaling philips 1080p dvd player to shame.
Really!?

Whenever I see the topic come up I always hear that it's nothing special.

Its does a good job, its certainly a better picture than my normal DVD player. I didnt even know the 360 upscaled DVDs? not that i use it for them anyways.

thanks gents....

didn't want to start yet another PS3 vs 360 battle :p

my Tohsiba HD-XE1 has just died so I'm wondering what to buy next.... sending it back for a full refund.... all good !

yes, yes and to answer your 3rd question ("is it worth it?"), only if your tv's scaler isnt up to scratch. i dont see much of a difference between scaling with the ps3 and letting my tv do the scaling (sony kdl 40w2000) :)
I was testing with Burnout Dominator yesterday and switching between the PS3 scaler and my 40W2000 scaler and there are noticably less jaggies when using the PS3 scaler.

Why not, it is about which scaler does the best in improving image quality when scaling from 576p to 1080p

I guess that if you have a different (cheaper) LCD the difference might be bigger as the 40W2000 has a very good scaler.

How do you enable the 40W2000 scaler?

Got the display size on "Full" if that's what you mean :o

with games it doesn't just upscale the picture. it improves the the rendering of textures and polygons. Although ive shown before, it's nowhere near as good as it could be. it looks like the ps3 smooths over the whole scene rather than rendering the polys at a higher res and smoothing the textures as it should do.

gt2 upscaled @1080p on the ps3:

gt2 upscaled on the pc @ 720p:

even at 720p, the ps3 is totally shown up.

I think the 2nd pic is when using a PC emulator like Bleem! which is a different thing altogether as that isn't just a scaler.

when the ps3 works with ps1/ps2 games it isnt just scaling either. that was my point - you might find there's less jaggies running the ps3 @ 1080p rather than letting the tv do the scaling, but thats because it isnt *just* scaling the final output. however, the pc outputting 720p and letting the tv scale that to 1080p has the least of all. far less:)

anyway, there's a nice little comparison of a few games on ign http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/793/793775p1.html

the important thing to note is that they arent photos of a tv displaying the image. they were captured, croped and put on the net with no resizing. you can see what the ps3 does to some titles:)

The LCD automatically scales the data it receives as it is 1080p so if it receives 576p it scales that to make it 1080p to display it.
