Does this build seem ok?

I'm not sure about the cooler, it will be beaten by similarly priced air coolers in terms of noise and performance. The only AIOs worth looking at are around the 240mm and 280mm range

I assume the budget is £1300?

This cooler is a beast, looks decent with the red scheme and is very quiet and cool running

There is the MSI 980 which has a red and black cooler shroud which would fit well :)
As you posted, 750W is enough for 980 SLI, or you could go for 850W (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-017-EA&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=2466) which gives you a little more headroom

You could also wait for the new AMD cards which should be coming soon, especially the R9 390 and 390X

I think that cooler is bigger than my last flat lol

the thing with the air coolers is that they really are all ugly as hell to me (even the nice ones)

The thing with waiting for the new range of cards is just gonna be cost. If I can't stretch to like, GTX titans etc now, i will be in the same place with new range of high end cards no doubt.

SLi isn't a huge concern to me, it's something I'd consider later as the price of a matched gpu dropped but it's not something I'm actively planning.

Initial build I wanna keep as close to £1300 as possible, I'll add to the system later (like doubling the ram etc)

Ok, well the 750W keeps the option open for you

It's entirely your choice on the GPU front, but buying a 980 right now isn't too bad of an idea, though it is one of the worse price: performance GPUs out right now, with the 290X and 970 only a few % behind it

For £1315 that I think is a good build, the only way you could "smallen" the price is probably to go to 8GB RAM or drop the cooler in search of a cheaper air cooler

its worth noting that stuff like the PSU, if for whatever reason in the future, a year down the line or something, I need one with more grunt, the 750w wouldnt be wasted, I'd put it to one side and use it in a mini-ITX system to replace my partners aging laptop (she thinks it's fine, I know it isn't).
Same with having dropped the blu-ray drive to save some money, I'll pull out the bog standard dvd drive at some point but keep it for her mini system.

So not entirely false economy

As for the current AMD gpus, the radeon stuff has been my first port of call for years and years but for what ever reason this time around, I really got it my head that I want to arm myself with physx cores etc
The nvidia power draw is nice too

The 9590 is just a higher clocked 8320, it's totally not worth it for that price
The 4790k will destroy it in every task, for this budget stick to Intel simply because performance will be better

i had the 8350 in a system a while back and that was a a really good cpu back then, paired up to.... i think it was a radeon 7950 3gb.

Probably right, intel seems to be my best option... I am reconsidering the nvidia gpu though, doesnt seem like I will be getting anything of considerable value for the extra money over a r9 290x

The 290X is very good price/performance at the moment

That saves you some money, and I added some bling which you may not want;

- Red/Black cablemods set which replace the stock EVGA G2 cables
- Enthoo Luxe LED strip, RGB so you can set it to red/blue/white and so on

AMD graphics cards are good value for money. The cpu's not so much :)

Oh my god those cables are lush. I absolutely do not need them but at the same time, I really really need them

Just a big thanks to all who chimed in on this, I'm close to settling on spec and committing money just working out some details, the thread opened up some ideas I hadn't considered.
