Does this look like a solid build?

Evening :)

After a few years of running an air-cooled OC'd 2600k, along with numerous mid-range GPU's, I've decided that technology has moved on enough to justify a totally new build.

My plan is for a reliable 24/7 4.8ghz O.C., without heating things up to surface-of-the-sun levels. Gaming isn't a massive priority, but when I do, I like it done right!

One thing......black and red is the theme!

Components selected so far are as follows -

Case - Corsair 780T. It's decent looking, hides the PSU with the side panel on, and has nice mounts for a rad.

Motherboard - ASUS Maximus VIII Hero. My ageing P8P67 Evo is a bit odd when it comes to overclocking, with a couple of BIOS screens seemingly doing the same thing, but then not, and some options being greyed out. How simple is the OC tuning on the Maximus? I'm not an idiot, but simple is always better!

CPU - 6700k. Not really any better options!

Cooling - Corsair H115i (with fans switched to Corsair ML140 Pro LED Reds). My current case has fans coming out of its ears. If I turn the rear exhaust fan into an intake, and pull the air up out the top through the rad, I end up with 2 fans less noise.....and less of a dust issue on top of the case!

GPU - MSI GTX 1070 GAMING X. Only really in this list for being the only properly black and red card I can find! Any major issues? I've owned MSI cards for a few years now (460, 560, 770) and haven't broken one yet!

PSU - Corsair HX750i. Enough grunt?

RAM - Vengeance, DDR4 2400Mhz. Prices for 16gb sets are all seemingly within a tenner or so of each other. Any better than this in the right colour?

HDD's - Re-using my current drives (main, 500gb Crucial M4 SSD, large storage, 3tb WD Sata III, system backups, my trusty old WD velociraptor, main off-site backup, 3tb Samsung USB 3 external))

If anyone sees a glaring issue with this build, let me know. I've researched a lot, but I thought a £1500+ build should have more than just me looking it over!

It looks fine to me, did a compatibility check and came back fine :)

Nice! What site does that check? That'd be handy for future use!

EDIT : What power plugs does the MSI 1070 need? Some cards need just an eight-pin, others double-up. I only ask as I'm being ultra-poncey with the colour coding, and am buying in sets of BitFenix red braided extensions for both connections to the mb, as well as the GPU!

you could get away with a much lower wattage power supply, anything above 450W will be plenty.

Also it is quite a large case for such a single card build with an aio. Perhaps you could go for an matx/itx build?

I would also recommend going for faster ram, around 3000Mhz should be better. Also the motherboard is a slightly different colour to the gpu, maybe go for an msi m5 or m7? the bios for most manufacturers is straightforward enough.

You could also save money by going for this gpu, it is close in performance to the 1070

Good call on the mb. Just read a few glowing reviews, and a few seem to be converts from the Asus camp! Cheaper too, so I can go for the faster RAM :)

As for the size of the case, I quite like having the space. I don't really want to end up with a little pressure cooker in the room. I'm currently using a HAF X, so the empty space should fit just right. I'd keep the HAF X, but I've fallen out of love with the looks......it's a bit 'functional' for me now!

The psu is overkill not to mention expensive. I have yet to see my pc hit 300w at the wall even with the 1070 heavily overclocked when benching. I would normally recommend a 550w unit but the Superflower Leadex Platinum 650w is on offer at the moment for a excellent £95.

I would change the case as well. Not only is the 780T massive and overpriced but it's starting to look dated now. In my opinion the best "bang for buck" cases around at the moment are the excellent phanteks range. the phanteks pro m or enthoo luxe would suit your build nicely while saving a big chunk of money to be spent elsewhere.

Are Super Flower trustworthy? I only ask, as I'm going to overclock anything that can be overclocked, and really need something 'nice'!

Ever since watching a Thortech Thunderbolt basically have a total seizure under load, I've been very wary! Corsair have always been good for me, and I have been eyeing up the RM650x.

I've listened to mentions of the case being too large for what I'm filling it with, so I may well have settled on a different case now (Carbide Series 400C), so I need a PSU no longer than 190mm.

The case is proving to be my biggest hurdle. The Lian-Li PC-J60WRX won't take 240mm rads, so my choice cooler won't fit. The In-Win 904 looks utterly amazing, but also looks to be utterly crap for cable management and rad-mounting options. The NZXT H440 looks decent, but I'd need to re-spray the red branded PSU cover, as I think it's a bit garish!

I take it I'm not the only one to have spent literally weeks staring at cases!

superflower are probably the best, they manufacture for evga and some of the corsair power supplies too! very hard to go wrong with a superflower psu. The corsair power supplies may be easier to find braided cables for though, but extensions are very feasible in a mid tower case.

Perhaps consider the corsair 400c, or the nzxt s340 elite? both look very clean with a 240mm aio mounted at the front

The 400C is currently top of my list. The s340 caught my eye yesterday, but the odd red cable routing system inside confused me a bit! Do you, by any chance, know when the Corsair Crystal 460X is due for release? It looks utterly stunning!

SuperFlower don't make any units for Corsair. The main Corsair oem is CWT.

I would never recommend something that is poor quality or from a dubious manufacturer!!

All the Phanteks cases I suggested easily take 240mm radiators, in fact they will take up to 2x 360mm rads. I did take your requirement for a radiator into consideration when picking them. They also come with fan filters, something that most more expensive cases neglect.

I took your advice on one of your points, the whole overkill thing. I dropped back to a 650w unit, but still in the Corsair range. I'm not usually the brand-loyal type, but their products have never let me down.......although there's always a first time at some random point in the future!!

As for the cases, they do look very nice. But, I turned on a sixpence and decided to go for a totally clean front-end, along with a totally covered PSU.

After I'm done though, I'll have all of my old kit sitting here in a HAF X. If I don't sell it, I might be tempted to do something with that too, so messing about with a new case might be on the cards!
