Dog problem

Well I can only hope the op doesn't fit into the category of people who get these 'cool' looking dogs but don't want it to affect their lifestyle. I would say your pup is doing well if he is only going in one corner, and that should be enough.

Read my previous replies I've explained why I prefer him doing it during the walks.

I think it's an anxiety issue, he grows up so fast, other dogs are reacting differently to him than one month ago.

My 4 months old Malamute has been living in the house and and he has learned to do the deeds during his walks. Unfortunately, ever since I started letting him roam the yard unsupervised, he turned a certain area of the yard into his personal toilet. Our walk tonight ended after 30 mins during which he did bugger all only to do it in the yard as soon as we got back.

Suggestions?

Save all the poop so you can send it though someones letterbox or even better, start selling it to OC'kers who often like to send poop though letterboxes.

get a cat instead, no need for walks and itl crap in the neighbours yard ;)

It will vomit in your house though or take a leak in your plant pots!

Our dog loves taking a dump in our garden but will only do it at the back in the corner which is good. She very rarely poops on walks but will urinate now and again.

I actually prefer her doing it in the garden because the lawn mower sucks the bad boys up. You need to get into a rhythm however to know when to hold your breath for the after smell!

He's 4 months old so still early days.

Make a massive fuss and give him lots of attention/treats etc when he goes when out on a walk. Make sure you walk him just before bedtime so he gets into the routine of doing it last thing at night. The important thing is to be consistent.

That said I think you have to accept that sometimes your dog is going to use your garden to go to the toilet. That is something you will have to accept. If you try to train your dog to never go in your garden it could backfire on you. If he's thinks he's not allowed to go in the garden then he'll hold it in and get so desperate he'll go in your house instead.

My dog (who is now a year old) initially only went in our garden and wouldn't go when out on walks. We did the above and made a massive fuss when we took her out. She normally goes when out on walks now but she will still use our garden regularly. Our grass is now quite patchy due to this. It's unavoidable but that is part of owning a dog.

Quite late to the thread and haven't read any of the replies... but I own a few Huskies.

They will gladly do number ones out on walks etc, but as soon as we're back from a walk, regardless of how long it is... 30 minute quick one or an all day affair.. the first thing they do is go in the back garden for number two. Not sure if its a sled dog thing or not...

Its not really a problem, as we just clean it up straight away and its done with. they are tiny too as they're both on raw diets.

Also, he's so young, so still very trainable :)

i think it should change, he is only 4 months old. when he gets more accustomed to his surroundings he'll go outside
do you get to grass pretty quickly into the walks?
most dogs go within the first 5mins of getting out

A dog will wee in your garden, regardless of where and how often you walk it.

If you don't want the above to happen, either walk it every time you take it outside or don't get a flipping dog.

Reminds me of an old VIZ Roger’s Profanisaurus entry.

Landmine!

A "Dogs Egg" hidden in the long grass awaiting detonation by a passing Lawnmower!

:p

I understand where you're coming from OP. I personally prefer taking my dog out for a walk and letting her do her business all in one fell swoop. Plus she's gotten in the habit now to "do it" right next to the poop bin when doing the daily loop round the neighbourhood. I'm guessing for her she know that's her own personal "toilet" know and she should try to go when given the opportunity.

That being said I'm not holding her against her will or anything to not go in the back garden. If she needs to go she'll let me know and I'll let her out, simple. But for the matter of convenience it's nice to have a set-up routine. Your pup is still young and is probably just going through habits (mine didn't like going on walks at one point, scared of the building sites or something :p) and enjoying the freedom that comes with having his own lil' spot in the garden for him to poo in private. When walking give them plenty of time to sniff around, they may act fussy but they'll eventually find a spot.

I bought some Dog Rocks which I put in his water, they definitely seem to have improved the patchy grass problem.

I did think about this but I worry about the effects the chemicals could have on the dog.

We've tried the grass patch up stuff you can use on the grass where it is patchy. That's not been very successful and we've tried a few brands. She tends to wee in the same spots, I think the repeated abuse is just too much for the lawn to take :D
