Dog/Puppy Prices

My wife mentioned this to me a few weeks ago - a 200 to 300% increase in prices over teh last 5 years. I was gobsmacked. What has caused this? Supply & Demand due to dodgy breeders being closed down ?

No. Fools and their money soon being parted.

Any dog can lash out unexpectedly. You aren't protected by that from buying the dog. Meeting a dog at a shelter, allows you to see its personality (warts and all) better than a few week old puppy at Dave the Breeders house.
True, and I guess you're right about getting to see what the dog is like before getting it from a home. I guess maybe it's not accurate, but my perception is still that rehomed dogs can be more risky than one which I know won't have been abused. Guess the home might have an idea about the history of some of their dogs if the owner just had to give them up rather than abused it - suppose maybe we should have a look.

lost my dog 4 weeks ago, she was just shy of 15, awful experience and miss her loads
started looking for another the prices are stupid

luckily i did find one that was at a reasonable price
i could not stomach spending 1000-2500 on a dog its madness! i would rather have waited
i hate to think of whats going to happen in 6-12 months time when people dont have time for them and they have to get rehomed

You can find some lovely dogs in a dogs home but sometimes if you want something particular you have to get from a puppy.
We want a Cocker Spaniel and it's unlike we'd find a puppy in a rescue centre.

Though we are set on getting a cat from a shelter we think we'd adopt in the future too

Don't want to crap on your parade here but you'll be lucky to see just over half of that from a boxer. They're very prone to cancers and neuro conditions.

Having spent the best part of 10 years looking to get one and having a family member who is a vet I am not really sure how you can make that kind of statement? Perhaps a Bulldog but the only concerns is heart issues. Which all family members are checked. This is why it is crucial to know of a breeder who's family can be traced back years. These are KC registered and are considered top breeders.

Buying off Facebook with no known history? Sure but you cant say you will be luck to see half. Strange but thanks for the info anyway

10 years and you couldn't find the following?

Boxer Dog Leading Causes of Death
In a 20 year study by the University of Georgia that looked at 82 dog breeds with at least 100 dogs of each, totaling over 70,000 in all, it is very clear what causes the most deaths with the Boxer dog breed.
#1 Cancer at 44.3%. The Boxer is the 5th breed most likely to die from cancer. This includes lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes), mast cell tumors (skin cancer), mammary gland and breast cancer (can be greatly reduced with spaying early), soft tissue sarcomas and bone cancer. Boxers are the #1 purebred dog most likely to develop mast cell tumors.
#2 Neurological at 18.2%. This includes diseases of the brain and spinal cord, such as intervertebral disc disease that can lead to paralysis, strokes; seizures, degenerative myelopathy, encephalitis; laryngeal paralysis and tumors of the brain and spinal cord.

Leading health issues to which Boxers are prone include cancers, heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (the so-called "Boxer cardiomyopathy"),[36] hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy

The breed is particularly predisposed to mast cell tumours, a cancer of the immune system

Median lifespan is 10 years.

University of Georgia? Is the source you provided for an American Boxer? Have any information regarding breeds in this country? I'd take a snippet from Google and post about every dog having issues and claim on an Internet forum I'm Cesar Millan. The average age for a Boxer is 10-12 years. I'm not really sure who you are but thanks for the info

I've never spent more than £300 on a puppy, and really can't see any reason to. I'd rather a mongrel from a loving home than any of these breeding trends. Cockapoo for £2500. Absolutely bonkers.

We just got a puppy and it's the same breed as our previous one. It was 2.5x the price.
I just assumed it was because everyone was home in lockdown that they choose now to look after a puppy.
Sadly thinking about it, now is the perfect time to get one as some/most can give them a lot of attention whilst stuck at home.
I worry that a lot of these new owners will get a shock when they have to go back to work and poor mutts will be stuck inside on their own.

Ours are the luckiest dogs in the world. If we're working they go to a local carer who has 6dogs max and takes them to the woods/fields twice a day. Very lucky.

We paid £450 for our ISDS border collie. Smartest and easiest to train plus give you plenty of exercise. Can't really go wrong.

Never understood people paying several thousands for a dog that can barely get up the stairs and is knackered after a 30 minute walk.

It's all dogs. Both mine are mongrel and one was close to 1k

My wife spent last 12 months looking at getting another English Springer spaniel pup after we lost ours to cancer 3 years ago . Since lockdown the prices have gone from £500-£600 to now £1500-£2000 this is looking on Pet4homes

Likewise, we paid £400 for our Collie 5 years ago.
