Dog/Puppy Prices

We just bought a Lab puppy for £750 we had been waiting in this litter for 18 month. Brother to our Lab same mum diff dad.

We bought a cocker just before lockdown. Nothing to do with it, just happened to pick her up the weekend before. (She is absolutely gorgeous, love her to bits, but lots of hard work!)

Just checked prices and they are ranging form double to four times as much as we paid. It will probably be a combination of the lockdown meaning lots of people want a dog and the changes to the breeding rules as to who can sell puppies. Reduced supply, increased demand, only one way prices will go.

I do hope though that in 6-12 months time we are not seeing a lot of unwanted dogs because people didn't do their homework before buying.

Insane prices for puppies atm, we bought our chocolate patterdale terrier home 2nd of feb, paid £450.Now, if you can even find one you are looking at 2k.

Even with all these crazy prices people are paying for puppies, all the rescue places are going to be so full up when folks start going back to work and suddenly realise they cant give their new dog the attention it needs.

They are for life no ifs buts or maybe's.

I'm waiting to see how this whole work from home thing continues after covid, I'd love a dog if I can spend most of my working week at home.

We've just got a dog - a PatterJack (cross breed of a Jack Russell and a Patterdale Terrier).

Really wanted to get a rescue dog, but due to having two young kids and a cat, and the COVID situation was proving impossible (and also only wanted a small dog - youngest daughter not great with bigger dogs) - rescue places are very cautious with the conditions they impose - most listed are not suitable for primary age kids, or good with cats etc.

With much trepidation we resorted to the website "Preloved" - really didn't agree with this but our choices were limited. As above - can't believe how expensive dogs have got, and how quick they sell - you literally have to reply to the advert about 5 minutes after listing to get a look in.

Loads of really expensive "vanity" dogs that I wouldn't even entertain buying to line the pockets of opportunist breeders.

In the end - our dog (Betty - 20 months old) was on for £400 - apparently a bit on the high side for a cross breed, but she looked perfect, used to kids, other dogs, and cats (one of the images in the advert was with Betty asleep with the sellers pet cat).

Got to the house, no bad vibes, handed over the cash and the owner immediately gave me £200 back, saying she didn't want to profit from her, and just wanted to make sure she went to a good home. Only reason for selling is that she has started a new job working 12 hour night shifts, so literally would have had no time to care for Betty.

Betty has settled in with no problems, absolutely loves the Kids (10 and 7), and cat now taking to her ok.......so all well. She is chipped, fully vaccinated etc.

But - as above did want a rescue dog but our situation was making this almost impossible.

Gonna take her out for a walk in 5 mins!, and good thing is I'm mostly based from home so she will very rarely be left alone

lost my Irish setter 17 months ago, wasn't ready for another but since the wife then left its been pretty miserable and my parents sorted me out another (I would never have done it as I felt guilty about replacing her, although its not a replacement) - pick her up on Wednesday :-)

She is costing £1250, from a reputable breeder, got my Mum and Dad one 7 years ago, cost £800 then, so I think if you go to good breeders then they wont scam you.

I'm in a very similar position. We really want a small dog that is toddler and cat friendly and have registered with every shelter we can think of plus passed all the checks and it's been going on a year with nothing suitable due to having our now 2 year old and the cats.

So are thinking of buying if the prices come down.

Is a mongrel costing more than pedigrees a new thing just because they are 'designer dogs'?
I kind of wish dog ownership was regulated better. Not that I have a clue how that would be achieved mind.

Damn, my parents got a Toy Poodle (and another one a year after that) for roughly 300 quid about 15/16 years ago.

Kind of ironic that I see this thread today of all days as I just lost one of them.

Mongrels with a poo mix have been fetching smore than pure breeds for good few years.

Yep - assume you don't want to wait forever - as long as you proceed with caution and weed out the opportunists, there are some genuine private re-homing sellers, but you've got to be really quick and respond to the ad pretty much as soon as it is listed.

Sorry to hear that - hope you are all ok and can look back on the great times you have had.
