Dog thefts

Dog's are a valuable commodity during a pandemic. Everyone wants one now the finance industry has a stay at home order.

Don't even get me started on the ransom money.

yeah it's more of a general guide, but they can still do some level of match up.

i'm mostly aiming my thoughts towards spending £X thousand on a specific pedigree breed.

I agree, it's ridiculous.

However the amount of people buying from randoms is ridiculous, you should only be buying from respectable and known breeders.

And don't get me started on Frenchies, may as well be denied your insurance with the amount of problem they'll probably have :p

There's been 4 attempted thefts around here lately. @TonyTurbo78 I don't know if you ever see the lady out with her dalmatian but she got approached last week by 2 guys and just ran for it. If they try touching my dog then I'll be doing time :D

Thanks mate, yep I heard. I speak to the owner of the Akita quite a lot, was his neighbour. Apparently silver car was waiting on Ullswater, one got out to distract her and the other got out with a pair of scissors to cut the lead I assume. We'd be sharing a cell mate, 100%.

i think it's just pedigrees for pets, maybe i'm biased but i can't see how a pedigree is going to be any better as a pet than a mongrel of approximately the right breed, indeed there are arguments that the health problems of many pedigree breeds make them worse as house pets.

but then i've never had a pet that wasn't from either the street or a shelter so maybe i don't understand.

I'd say you are right, as far as I am aware a cross bred dog is more likely to be healthy Vs a pedigree that can have many breed specific genetic issues.

If someone nicked my dog, they'd best make sure I never, ever find them. I will burn their entire existence to the ground.

It’s a nice thought, unfortunately, you’re not doing anything if it’s a traveller family who nick it. You’re going to rock up to a site and 1v1 them all?

I'd better keep a close eye on my tropical fish! I had a kitty tetra go missing last week, I blamed the cockatoo apisto but now I'm not so sure..

I always remember doing genetics in GCSE biology, our teacher had a real bee in his bonnet about the way humans have selectively bred dogs to look 'desirable' while condemning them to a life of health problems.

Couldn't agree more.

British Bull Terrier
Pugs
German Shepard
Dachshund was bred I think to get another vertebrae at one point? (Maybe?)

Anyway, that's a different topic :p

Kind of linked though.

I'm pretty sure there will be a whole load of fantastic dogs still in rescue shelters that would make a fine canine companion for most people, but being 'mongrels' mean they aren't desired.

If people weren't prepared to pay £1,000s for unhealthy dogs while healthy dogs were available for free then the thefts would pretty much go away.

If you think about it it's like walking round with a 3k item. If it's running around, that's like leaving your laptop on a park bench 3 tables away.

It's no surprise that those who know what they are looking for are cashing in.

Does seem to be a lot of the tradition 'type' doing this. It sucks police cant/don't do something about that 'type'

Give it a few months and this market will tank as people go back to work and that cute puppy is now tearing up the house as it wasn't properly trained and purchased on a whim.
Also rescues will be full.

Rescues don't help making it nigh on impossible to rehome

Disgusting breeds. My parents have a couple of bulldogs someone got rid of. The health problems are horrendous. Always at the vet

People who get these are not animal lovers.

Real criminals are the ones selling the dogs pups. Would you sell your kids? So you think its ok to sell a dogs kids?

Sorry don't get the context of the question - it was just an example of the ridiculous situation at the moment, in that dogs are being sold for absolutely ridiculous prices, hence making it very lucrative for some of the more unscrupulous persons involved.

Of course nobody would sell their kids - but with regard to dogs I can't see any other way that you would get one? Clearly I'd advocate any potential owner to make sure they obtain a dog from a reputable breeder, a shelter, or a genuine rehoming case.
