Hi all,

I’m sure others have to deal with this but our 18 months old rescue is understandably terrified right now with the fireworks.

Just wondering if anyone has suggestions for stuff to help calm him? We have a thundershirt, calming wipes and we’re playing music to try to drown it out. Any other recommendations?

Dogtrust advice :
  • Block out flashes and bangs. Close any windows or curtains and turn the lights on. Put on music or the TV to help disguise the noise.
  • Recognise the needs of your individual dog and let them choose:
    • If your dog wants to hide, let them stay where they feel safe.
    • If they seek reassurance, calmly give them attention and comfort. Research shows that ignoring them won’t help.
    • If your dog doesn’t seem worried, then it’s best to keep them busy with their favourite toys or activities so they don’t become anxious.
  • Try to stay calm and relaxed yourself. Your dog will pick up on how you’re feeling, so do your best to relax.
  • If your dog makes a mess by accident, avoid telling them off as this might make them feel more scared.

Yeah, my dogs aren't enjoying it
It's absolutely ****ing down outside and people are still letting off fireworks.
Bloody muppets.

Yeah around here it’s like a warzone for weeks. Drives me insane. *********.

@dave28 he hides in our bathroom as it’s in the centre of the flat with no windows. It’s heartbreaking when he gets really scared but yeah i think we have to learn not to react to the noise ourselves as we get ****** off with it.

Not much you can do. Our dachshund has a very bad time with fireworks, always quivering, not being able to decide where to be/hide, and often weeing over rugs etc. We just have loud TV as much as possible. It'd be much easier if other people were considerate and set them off on one night only (OK, two if you count New Year's).

I like fireworks, but other people are beyond selfish setting them off for weeks. Government should probably either stop the sale to the public (bit harsh), or mandate silent fireworks.

No i agree, their sale should be restricted. Too many halfwits sell them to anyone and the halfwits they sell them to set them off for weeks and weeks. The other night some idiots set off a box of about 50 rockets… at midnight. I would happily waterboard them.

Make them brush their teeth with a really nice minty toothpaste, then waterboard them with orange juice.

They should really restrict what days they can be used on in the year, not trying to be unfair but they do seem to go on for weeks, so a reasonable allowance is fair.

I was going to say #2 too. But actual yes, because horses have either their ears or eyes blocked on a horse race sometimes. So noise cancelling headphones should be alright. (joking)

At least 4 fireworks displays have been cancelled due to the flooding of fields used.
Leicester Racecourse’s still going ahead but no parking bar for blue badge holders as everyone else parks on mud.,

Wish fireworks were banned for the general public to buy. As they fire them in all weathers and time

I guess you'd have tried something like it already but if you've got another dog which isn't bothered by them, keeping them together can sometimes help, depends on the nature of both dogs though.

I live in a livestock area where people aren't supposed to use noisy fireworks, but an hour ago or so someone from the vague direction where I know new people have moved in recently had a load of loud rockets.

Too late for this year but this has been a gamechanger for our greyhound: https://www.pipsbootique.com/shop-2

I’ve also heard people suggest desensitising them but again that will take weeks/months of loud noise exposure.

He was fine with them until some utter **** set one off in August last year when he was going out for a wee before bed and terrified him. He bolted and we didn’t find him for four hours.

I love fireworks but they should be for organised displays only. They create too many problems.
