Dogs and fireworks, suggestions.

As for the dog, i would buy fireworks, have the dog watch me set it off, the dog will then learn, i remove something from a box, light it, it flies up, and explodes.

The other problem is, both you and your dog are hiding in the bathroom from this banging sound. You have basically taught your dog he should be afraid, and when it happens again, we should go hide together in the bathroom.

Might work for some dogs, but certainly not all. Didn't work with ours, after 12 years we've had to accept that he's scared of certain types of loud noises, fireworks, bird scarers and gun shots. He's fine with any sort of noisy vehicle (even the divs with crackle maps or cars backfiring) even if they're only a few feet away.

There’s conflicting views on this so it’s difficult to know who is correct. He hides in there as it has no windows so it’s a den of sorts. When they get really bad he shakes a lot and his breathing becomes rapid. After some time with him and having the music on he starts to calm and then we leave him in there. He comes out on his own during the night.

Barney is the same, panting and generally pacing about, wont settle anywhere. Radios and TV on loud and attention when he wants it.

One night? where do you live? on a little island on your own? :D

I'm on the edge of a small town and we've been hearing the odd few each evening from early October, bedlam all evening this last week. It'll continue with a few each evening now until New years eve when it'll kick off again.

Dogs complain about fireworks for one night, neighbours complain about dogs barking all year.

It’s not for one night though, it goes on for weeks. The main event was both nights over the weekend but they have been setting them off for at least two weeks around here. Then you have Diwali this weekend and NY.

The thread isn’t intended to end up in a whataboutism contest, it was mainly to see what other dog owners do to help alleviate the stress on their pets.

Thank heavens that weekend is done.
We're fortunate that people around here seem relatively restrained with fireworks other than what are usually the weekends either side of 5th Nov.
Poor pooch hid under my work desk for most of this weekend... maybe the aroma of my feet is comforting :D

Loads of fireworks this weekend as its Diwali.

About 15 years dad was driving home early Nov in the company car he had at the time. Heard this thud on the roof. Got home about 2-3 miles later and there was a dent about 15cm x 6cm with a scorch mark to one half of it. A firework landed on the roof. Dread to think what would have happened if the firework landed on the windscreen.

Had odd straggler today but thankfully the vast bulk is done.

I'd love to know wtf's going on down the road from me, sounds like fireworks but it's been constant for the last hour at least and I don't see any sky rockets going off. Honestly sounds like a distant warzone.

The only thing I can think of is Diwali, but shirley that wouldn't go on for so long

Mercifully it hasn’t been too bad around here. We have had some fireworks going off but barely even registered compared to last weekend.

The mutt retreated to the bathroom ac couple of times but came back out after a minute or so. Fingers crossed he’s starting to feel accustomed to it.
