Doing additional work at home

This is how I deal with a ridiculously heavy work load:

Work my contracted hours. Go home and relax.

Let the backlog build up. A manager will notice and start to panic. If they know you are a hard worker they will do something about. Get more bodies on the job, paid overtime etc.

I even refuse paid overtime when there are backlogs and they have to go and find someone else. Don't waste your life on work, it's not worth it. Unless you are trying to find a cure for cancer or doing something that is actually helping humanity in a big way.

Some people are just stupid. You should work your hours and any work that isn't done, is up to the company to manage.

Can you imagine teachers doing that?

I know several teachers and not one of them doesn't spend several hours in the evening and weekends and their holidays marking, prep'ing, etc. Respect to them, but the whole 'It's a 'calling'' is a shoddy excuse, in so many jobs, for paying rubbish wages.

I have 36 contracted hours, and my salary was decided based on those hours. I will not work any more hours unless I'm paid overtime. I have colleagues who will go home, log on, and do hours of additional work at home and expect no recompense for it. I think it's absolutely barmy.

Teaching is not like most jobs. My father is a retired teacher and I have seen first hand the amount of work that is required outside of school hours..it's a lot! Job is extremely stressful as well if the kids are not well behaved/intelligent. If the kids respected you and were willing to learn it might be worth it, but in today's society forgot it. The Government is also always meddling with the education system causing teachers even more work. I feel sorry for people going into that job blindly.
