Dolby Access: Dolby Atmos for Headphones in Games

I know nothing about sound but noticed Atmos was better than windows sonic on COD Warfare, I never buy software like this but will buy when my trial ends. Only thing is at mo is it won't update, keeps failing.

What won't update? I bought Atmos yesterday myself and too never usually buy anything like this. The exception was a VR driver for Oculus Rift as I tried getting Amnesia, Dark descent to work in VR - I did but it wasnt great and would have pood myself after 10 mins anyway :D

Back to Atmos though, I searched and found some demo content here - https://thedigitaltheater.com/dolby-trailers/
https://www.demo-world.eu/2d-demo-trailers-hd/

Why Dolby don't put all the demo content in Dolby access, I don't know

BF1 was the sequel to BF4 wasnt it? I never played it, only 1942 (proper BF1) BF2 and BF3.

How do you go about processing sounds through HDMI? I have a Xonar Essenese ST soundcard (output RCA to speakers and 6.3mm to headphones) and monitor is connected to DisplayPort 1.4
I’m not sure to be honest. This is what I read:

Look at those pics.

What little Windows Sonic for Headphones recordings I've founds they plain suck sounding like dumb downmixing...
And read that it hasn't never even worked in PC, which fits perfectly to how Microsoft has been treating PC gaming audio.
Though not that Xbox version sounds that good either.

Yea I think your right, I could never tell where sounds are, been using win sonic for ages. Just thought my gear was not great, with atmos I can actually tell direction no problem.

I've read the thread and it sounds just like Battlefield 1 where Atmos is screwed as other games mentioned work fine (e.g. Overwatch)
I don't have BF1 to try but was tempted to see if it works for me through Atmos for headphone.
Isnt that thread from 2016 too and Atmos for headphone support in Windows requires 15063.0 or higher / Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher which are post post 2016

If someone knows how I can get BF1 for free, i will happily try but won't buy it as i'm playing COD MW which works fine with Atmos.

I wish there was a way to get it for free other then using Origin's monthly plan. I can't explain the who/what of the thread other then assume it was there and perhaps they had an older version.

But having tested both Dolby Access/Atmos and DTS Sound Unbound in Modern Warfare I've found that DTS is simply better at audio positioning of footsteps, gun fire and other player movement then with Dolby Access.
I've used all the different options in Dolby Access vs using Spacious in DTS and IMO sound positioning is better from a greater distance.

It appears to me that the one main difference is that DTS actually tweaks the audio based on make/model of headphone. For me, I'm using my Senn's which was an option to choose from with DTS. Even watching Youtube video's I don't experience any echo or reverb issues. And nearly forgot to turn it off. Audio was still natural to my ears albeit a tad different. I can't say how other cans would sound as all I have are Senn's. But from reading other responses it does appear to be headphone dependent. IE: Using Generic vs Senn's for example.

Between the two, Dolby Audio simulates surround sound but more direct to stereo. While DTS simulates surround sound with a wider sound stage using spacious. Now this comes from my cans. Can't say how other cans will do.

Edit:

Looks like you do need a receiver after all. Sigh...

The whole trend of surround software and hardware is of no use if the games sound code is trash.
I mean when you say was best for footsteps in warzone I just had to laugh.
People can run right up to you in cloggs on broken glass in that game and you'll hear nothing, the games audio is flakey it's not the hardware or sound software it's the game that is the issue.
