Domain name - full name or something unique for an online portfolio?

I'm having second thoughts about the domain name I purchased recently. I did not purchase the domain name I was after originally due to its high asking price as seen in this thread.

1. Is it best to have a domain name that contains your full name as an online portfolio?

2. Is it best to have a Unique, short and memorable domain name as an online portfolio?

Currently I prefer number 2 because of the following reasons:

  • Unique, short and memorable
  • My first name is often misspelt even though it's a well known Christian name (for example: if I told someone I had a full name domain name, they may enter it wrongly)
  • Having a full name domain in your email address seems a little awkward to me
  • Privacy. I'm not keen on exposing my full name especially when I want to use the domain name other uses rather than solely for an online portfolio
However, I've come up with the following reason for number 1:

  • Looks more professional in your CV
As you can see, I'm short of reasons for number 1 :o :p

I would like to read other members' opinions to help me justify my recent domain name purchase :p

I like something short and catchy, easy to remember. My domain for instance, we were lucky enough to get the .CC which is actually short for central command, our name, which could be almost literally any kind of site. Could be a blog, could be a company, could be the government, lol.

I felt the same when I purchased my domain as would like to place it onto my CV and don't think its professional enough but then again it will only be used for that sparingly for that anyway (i hope!)

Aside from the CV part are you happy with the domain name you got? Would agree with the content doing the talking!

Personally I just used my name with middle initials, but my name is quite short. Also stick to .com if you can, by far the most well known and easier to remember.

Go with www.JonathanWoon.com, sounds fine!

Who's to say he's cybersquatting? I own 3 domain, have done for years and have used all 3 of them but currently I'm only using them for email of redirection. They're still mine though and I don't consider myself to be cybersquatting.

The fact that he's asked so much is partly out of cheek but also possibly because he values owning them or likes having them for a static e-mail address etc. There's plenty of reasons to own a domain but not publish anything on it. As for not being made another off - pretty flimsy idea that, especially if it's a .com I don't know what the domain name is but I get an offer to buy mine at least twice a year.

OP - don't worry about the domain name, if it's a boring unimaginative name it's more likely to count against you than poor content on it!

I've got EdwardB.co.uk and my real name is Edward B****** (after blanking it out I bet my name is in my Trust anyways!)

I've had that domain years, since primary school I think, but I'm lazy with it. Never made a decent site on it despite making loads of other proper sites for people, in the end I mainly use it for emailing as IMHO [email protected] looks quite pro.

Not excusing cybersquatters though, I've encountered a few real ****s

Why do you want to hide your last name?

Thanks for your replies everyone. I've decided to go with both options and using them for different things :)

at a guess so that people can't google him, as friends/family always like to do, and then come across this thread, and then from there see all posts by that user and find something embarassing for him?

I hope this doesn't happen to me but I very rarely talk about personal things on forums anyway :p

Pretty much.

But thinking about it they know my internet pseudonym anyways as it's my GMail address.
