DON'T BUY MSI THEY MIS-SOLD TOP SPEC GT SERIES LAPTOPS with MXM Graphics

What you are presenting as evidence doesn't persuade me. I thought that much was clear?

So demonstrating that it is easy and simple to make the upgrade, that MSI's major US based reseller offers the upgrade, doesn't persuade you, ok.

So only MSI stating that the upgrade is possible would persuade you?

After the PR disaster they have had handling this already do you think they would make that statement now?

I'm intrigued what was your purpose in contributing to this thread, was it to belittle my posts or simple to troll because you were bored?

Compatible and supported. Rroff made some good points on this yesterday, I won't repeat them. Of course it's physically possible, MXM is a standard.

Which variant of MXM are you referring to as a standard, 3.0, 3.0B, 3.1? Who is responsible for the design of MXM standard Nvidia or the graphics card manufacturer?

Ah, that old chestnut .... "anyone that doesn't agree with me is a troll". Classy. How many trolls do you know that were here pre-forums Nuke?[/QUOTE]

I suggest you are trolling because you haven't read the entire thread to see what evidence has been historically presented whilst claiming there is no evidence of MSI lying. Oh, and you not answering what you would consider evidence to actually be.

(Just as an aside, I would like to thank you for keeping the thread active and helping make people aware of how MSI treat their high ticket customers).

MISJAH it would maybe help if you did something like collect and summarize all of the important posts and put them within the first post of the thread in a logical date-ordered fashion. That way you wouldn't have to worry about people (understandably) not going through the whole thread to find relevant information. :)

Yeah, valid point.

Will update when I get the time.

Nearly 75,000 unique visitors to this thread.

I'll keep the thread active and updated as this situation is still ongoing in the US legal system.

Depending on the outcome of the class action case a similar suit will follow in the UK to claim back any costs for upgrading via the scam.

Don't feel sorry for me, I actively choose to upkeep this thread as owners were treated so badly.

It's not 75,000 unique visitors, it's 75,000 views. A lot of those views will be from the same people coming back again and again and reading this thread.

That lawsuit was filed over a year ago. Has anything actually moved forward with that?

Odd, I've visited this page numerous times since you posted and the count has not increased, maybe as op it doesn't register my visits?

Conspiracy theories now lol. I actually said I won't ever buy MSI either. Prefer Alienware,

I'll state again, this has only done a small hit on MSI's reputational damage, if any. They've hardly gone bankrupt.

Yep. I read that you would not buy MSI.

What’s your source and metric for the damage done to MSI’s reputation, I’m intrigued.

I guess one metric would be that whenever a tech website reviews or recommends a gaming laptop, an MSi is often, though not always, recommended to readers and this unfortunate episode regarding the GT72 and GT80 is never mentioned anywhere. For some people, MSi became known in the first place a few years ago because of the strong challenge they posed to Alienware in the gaming laptop market, especially when they released the Dragon edition, though luckily several other challengers have emerged since then.

Another would be, for better or worse, noted websites do recommend them still as a top manufacturer such as Engadget:

https://www.engadget.com/2017/07/15/best-and-worst-gaming-laptop-brands-2017/

When this first occurred I spoke to various tech websites and asked them to take on the story, was advised that if anything negative was reflected about MSI, MSI would not provide test units to review. Thus losing them readership to competitor websites.

I recently bought a HTC Vive and have been enjoying VR, but VR doesn't work well with SLI. I am one of those who was happily owning a GT80 with 980Ms knowing I could upgrade its graphics when the day came. The day came and I'm sad to read that MSI has cancelled that possibility and treats their customers this way. Also to find out that if I did want to upgrade, the only offer had a deadline of 1.5 years in the past. I had no way to know that! It would have just taken an email letting me know the offer was available. This was a really expensive laptop and I feel really screwed over.

Thanks MiSJAH for being so diligent and keeping the information active all this time. I won't be buying from MSI anymore and will let others interested know this situation.

Hey Eric,

I missed this post somehow....

You are welcome, feel free to spread the message about how MSI treats their high ticket customers.

I would really really consider what you post in public if you are suggesting we are leaning on Overclockers to close your thread. You are suggesting we are coercing or forcing Overclockers to close the thread. At no time whatsoever have we suggested directly or indirectly to close the thread. Nor have we spoken to an OcUK forum mod or employee asking for the thread to be closed or removed.

Your suggestion is defamatory to the good name of MSI. If this line continues without any foundation whatosever then this will be left to our legal team to take further under the Defamation Act 2013. Suggesting we are leaning on Overclockers is damaging to our brand and reputation and we will seek immediate redress.

So a year and half later, my comments still stand in the thread and 'immediate redress' by MSI's legal team never materialised.

(Point of note; Loki is no longer a rep for MSI but now with ASUS ROG. Beware.)

I'm sure they are hoping its all swept under the rug now.

Yeah, however when the US class action is finalised I expect the UK side to be re-motivated. And when Ampere, or whatever nvidia decide to call the next gen cards.

So Loki was concerned about the reputation of MSI with regard to asking for the thread to be closed but the company seem to have zero concern for the reputational loss due to this whole shambles.

Guess his scare tactic didn’t work. Plonker.

Yeah, t'was ironic.

i know im rly late but i just want to know one thing about this mxm upgrade,
is it matter if my varanty expired.
its 3 years when i bought my laptop and its time to upgrade, im registered MSI used and didnt get info about trade in programs or anything
and now im stuck with 980m

Email: [email protected]

If MSI UK give you any issues please reply here and we will highlight the error of their ways yet again.

got answer from MSI.
Trade in program is up.
They just need all details about my mashine plus invoice.
and in 10 days they prepare proposal for me (purchace price minus age)

doesnt sound like i will get good value in that trade, but we'll see

There's no reason why you should get a worse deal than I did.

MSI UK Trade-in landing page - https://uk.msi.com/Landing/ukgttradein

I traded from a GT72 2QE w/ GTX 980M to GT73 7RF with GTX 1080 for under £400.

Oh, and my GT72 was a returned 'B' grade model I bought from overclockers clearance section.

If they try and give you a worse deal point them to this post, and I'm happy to provide any supporting info you require. EG, copy of my trade-in agreement, etc...

Good luck.

So when the Trade-in scam was announced, MSI in the USA stated that the 'program' would cover two generations of GPU upgrades and it looks like they will be as good as their word.

A representative of MSI UK stated that they would only cover a single generation of GPU upgrade.

MSI's marketing claims were worldwide.

So if the US gets the second generation upgrade, we will push for the UK to have the same process.

If one has bought a 2nd hand GT72 6QE, could one also speak with MSI for a potential trade in?

MSI UK will tell you 'no' 2nd hand units are not eligible.

But if you bought that specific model due to MSI's advertised upgradability they should honour their advertising.

Feel free to quote that they allowed me to upgrade and mine was a 'b' grade (ergo, 2nd hand).
