Dont Starve Thread

for as long as you can be bothered to keep running around gathering food, someone finds a way to easily manage like you would in real life.
the devs think thats to easy so do something retarded to stop you having a berry bush farm or whatever by making them grow stupidly slow instead, and not replenishing unless you give them manure.

It's a shame because the game could be so much more and totally awesome but the devs just want a game where you constantly collect food and it gets boring fast.
There's no real re-playability to it other than trying to last longer than you did before and your start in the game is extremely random , sometimes you get lucky and the first few days are easy sometimes you get put somewhere crap and it's almost impossible to survive unless you can find a good area fast

The updates to the game have also been incredibly slow and something thats more of a novelty than useful

You don't need to constantly micro-manage food. You just need to learn how the system works and build your base/farms accordingly.

The game actually is awesome - there's tons to do and loads of options for food gathering and exploration. I think you've not given it enough of a try.

Updates have been slow? I'm sorry but that's completely untrue. There have been regular content updates every two weeks whilst the game has been in development and the dev team have committed to releasing further (if slightly slower) content updates for the next 6 months. The updates have added tons of new content and have been far from merely novelty stuff.

At the end of the day, this is a roguelike. If you don't like roguelikes then you won't like this game. Sorry to come across harshly but your post is filled with misinformation.

gets tiresome when the devs will add something in a patch to stop your method of farming the system.

I've had the game long enough to get a good impression of it.
If you remember I gave you my spare keys months ago ;)

updates every 2 weeks? sometimes there hasn't been an update for over 20 days and then something comes and its a disappointment

I guess we've just got different opinions on it then.

I forgot that you gave me that spare key for a friend - still very much appreciated :)

Updates were fairly regular at two weeks from memory. There may have been the odd occasion where they were delayed though.

Personally I think that balancing the system with fixes of things that are close to being exploits isn't a bad thing either :p

well if it's possible in real life it should be possible in the game they should use more creative ways of nerfing stuff they see as being OP.

I'm sure it's a marmite game and some people will absolutely love it but my experience and my sons as well as a few people in this thread is that the game isn't quite deep enough yet and it does get quite repetitive fairly quickly.

When I bought it the price was much less and more worth taking the chance, I get the impression there's probably only about 5 people at most working on the game and it will never fulfil its potential

Yeah...It's very much an indie game and the dev team is small.

Tbh I got bored of it eventually but I got 70 hours of play out of it, which seems awesome for the pittance I paid for it. £12 would be slightly less good value, though still okay.

Anyone know if this works on xbox controller? This would be a great game on the lounge tv.

If you are talking about don't starve, it works perfectly with the xbox 360 controller, I use the wireless one with it. I admit I use the mouse to move about items in my inventory but that's about it.

Bit of a bump.. :)

I have just purchased this, just wanting to get some tips on peoples methods of getting food...

I am using a slow combo of farms and rabbits at the moment.

Unless it has been changed by a patch then you're best off farming lots of honey and meat. Use excessive amounts of crockpots for spoilage-free storage.

Thanks,

I already have a few crockpots on the go, had a lot of rabbit meat but now sort of back to square one..

Do i NEED the bee helmet to catch bee's? for honey, or is there another way?

Any more general advice? :)

Im really enjoying this game. :)

Fishing is pretty nice I found, endless supply of food if you can find a pond near you're base. Only trouble is they freeze over in winter.

A log suit works well enough but you need to keep an eye on it as when it goes down you will do too shortly after it :p

Personally I used to set up camp not stupidly far from a spider's nest. On one map I found a spider's nest, a pig village and some beefalo all within a short distance of each other. Once you find anywhere similar to this you have an endless supply of monster meat, meat and silk. Get established (get a spade and transplant tons of grass and saplings...also feed berries that have nearly spoiled to the pigs for extra manure) and then go hunting for hives. I think since the patch they reduced the honey output so you'll probably want 4 hives to ensure you've got more honey than you know what to do with. Be sure to build spare nets so you can catch a ton of butterflies to generate flowers around your hives too.

There has been tons of new content and rebalancing since I last played so I'm not sure what to say in regards to general tips. My experiences with winter meant that I went out of my way to make sure I got some kind of warm clothing asap after getting the basics established.

I got the game in the Steam sale. My first playthrough didn't go so good. Struggled to get enough food to keep myself alive the first few days. Was finally starting to get the hang of it, using traps to catch rabbits and planting berry bushes, when I tried to take on a pair of pigmen for their meat.

Yeah.... I killed one, but the other killed me. Only made it to day 7! Hopefully next playthough will go better. Might increase the amount of berries and carrots that spawn to give myself a bit of an easier time.

Ok well I put the options for carrots and berries to maximum and left everything else default. Turns out this was a mistake. Yeah it meant I had a tons of food available, wasn't likely to starve before winter hit. But all the berry bush spawns stripped the map of virtually everything else. I only found a couple of spider dens, no beefalos, a couple of pig villages and not much else. Which made the game pretty damn boring.

Ended up getting attacked and killed by a pack of hounds. At least I unlocked the second character, so I think I'll try her next with things back to default.

The only thing I'd ever recommend changing from default gameplay would *maybe* be increasing the average day length. Personally I wouldn't do even this though - at least not until you've experienced most of the game "properly" and want to just cut down on some of the boring parts of night.

Yeah sounds like a good idea. I almost died on the 2nd night of my 2nd playthrough. I had prepared a tuft of grass to toss onto the fire, but then got distracted chopping down trees next to my camp. Realised a split second too late that I hadn't lit the fire just as nightfall hit.

Couldn't find the firepit in the dark, so it was only crafting a torch at the last second that saved me from the Grue's wrath :o
