Doom 4 screenshots

They should create some similar bone crunching sound effects that were used in Doom 1 & 2

Things like the Super shotgun sound, teleport, doors opening, imps etc

I still hear sounds that were created for Doom on TV programs, films and in music. Either that or ID used previsouly created sounds for things like teleports and doors

It needs to be more gritty than Doom 3 too, keep it similar style to Doom/Doom 2/Quake 1

I can't remember the name of it off hand but theres a huge professional sound sample library thats used mostly for movies that most id and other games have used sounds from. I hear sounds from starcraft used in movies, etc. quite often especially the zerg roar effect.

Doom 3 was pretty good, quite short of great. Looking forward to this, but it certainly won't be a pre-order, maybe a day-one buy if it looks to be shaping up nicely.

Also the sound the final boss in Doom 2 makes when he is spawning enemies - I've heard that in so many movies, tv programs and games. It's almost always something to do with fire and explosions - possibly a real sound?

Really looking forward to do this. I hope the game is totally brutal in terms of gore and violence, a proper 18 rated game.

It should be. No games have been made with proper gore yet and dismemberment like good old Soldier of furtune. IMO, if you shoot someone in the arm with a shotgun, they dont fall over dead. They lose their arm

Never really understood how you can shoot an enemy in the feet and kill them

I too didn't like the mechanics for the flashlight drove me nuts that did so will be interesting to see what happens in Doom 4 :D

We'll be lucky... How long was Rage in development?

Yeah but when you already have the engine it doesn't take as long. Spear of Destiny, Doom II/Heretic/Hexen, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Quake 4 were all made faster than Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, Quake 3 and Doom 3 respectively.

As Doom used Midi sound effects/music the was a large library of effects they ad access to and some are used in really innovative ways. I.E in Wolfenstein and Doom II the music where you can hear Nazi's marching in the background actually uses a Gunshot effect that's cut off part way through, the used to be an issue on Roland sound cards playing the entire effect due to timing issues.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but even with the idTech5 development from Rage I can't see it appearing for at least a couple of years.

Rage was in development for seven years, and Doom 4 production began in Q2 of 2008 iirc.

Rage was in development for seven years

Quake 4 shipped 14 months after Doom 3, Doom II shipped 10 months after Doom, Spear of Destiny shipped only 4 months after Wolfenstein 3d (although it was more like another episode than a new game).

Once the game engine is ready games don't take that long.

Yeah, I also think it will be sooner than later, though I'm a bit doubful for this year. I really hope this is not 'just' a good game, but a great one. If they play their cards right by balancing the production between Doom 1 & 2 mechanics (with a few modern mechanics in as well - we can't expect a carbon copy of gameplay and I for one wouldn't want it) and modern visuals, this could be an overwhelmingly huge money spinner for them. I don't know how well the last Wolfenstein game sold for example, but I would have thought it might have made it curiously tempting for some to visit id's back catalogue. :)

In fact, just thinking about their older games is actually making me want to play the early Doom games again. :D

The older games (not just ID) are usually better for some reason. I think its the sound effects, music and general atmosphere. I havent played Doom 1 / 2 in years, yet I can hum the music and remember certain level layouts.

The only other games that stand out in my mind for unique atmosphere are Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and Quake (and of course Doom 1/2)

I've often thought of it as the simpler idea usually being the best providing if it's done well (get the basics right and done rock solid for the consumer and leave them wanting more). The more complex and modern day fps / fps rpg games, can be even better suited for my personal tastes for example, but they are harder to pull off.

The funny thing is that I always preferred Doom for overall, and particularly for its sound, on the PSX and Saturn. I appreciate the music on the pc was good for its time, but I couldn't stand it. :D

Out of interest, has anyone played a modded Doom 1 or 2? Surprisingly, it's something I haven't yet tinkered with. Any good mods out there?

Doom/Quake were the games that creted modding, Team Fortress which is now a popular game in itself started out as a Quake mod, I don't know how well this will have dated:

But its one of the most fun mods I have ever played for any game ever, its pretty short but it had its own storyline completely independent of doom. Was very involving and had some great alternate uses of things form the game.

You may want to also try out the Simpsons mod for Doom :P. Zdoom gives you 3D mouse contorl, GLoom gives you 3D OpenGL rendering and new 3D weapon/enemy models, there's loads of stuff out there if you can still find it.
